Range Report - First Handloads

Great Range Report Kalison!

Shot my first reloads of 308 Winchester through my Remington 700 VDL, this past weekend as well. :)

Wait until you start adding more calibers!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

You done good.

Now you can be honest - weren't you just a little nervous the first time you pulled the trigger?

I will never forget my first time. I was quite certain that I was going to either (1) blow my arm off, or (2) take out the back wall!!!

It's a rite of passage for the hand loader.
that first few rounds.
Number One takes about a half hour to fire. Then you finally man up, point the gun in the general direction, close your eyes and yank the trigger.
The next 5 shot group is to be disregarded, as your still twitching from the first.
After ya calm down some, then we can return to irregularly scheduled abnormal programming already in progress.

LOL, yes. Once I got past that first cylinder I got all settled in and things were normal.

I'm about to load my first batch ever, 158 grain LSWC with Red Dot. I am super careful and actually a bit OCD so I know I will check and recheck everything. But I am still very nervous about touching off those first few. I figure it's like losing your virginity. Built it up to being such a momentous thing, then it's over in 5 seconds and you wonder what all the fuss was about!

I'll be posting breaking my reloading cherry in about a week!

Been reloading 7 + years now but still remember the first time I tried out my own. Seriously considered "hugging a tree" just to be safe and protect my most valuables!

"Well Son, there comes time when every Man experiences his first time" It will be quick!

But you will always remember it.:D:D

Yeah, but I'm hedging my bets and using my Ruger Six for the maiden voyage! I want every bit of metal on my side! My Model 65 will get shot later!

I went slow and checked for bullets creeping out and any other oddities
The fact that you were slow and meticulous is the reason you had a good experience and good handloads. Keep up the good work!

Could be right. .... or ya could have that extra metal in your side:D
hey. ... don't look to me for comfort.
It's the moment of acute drama that makes the rite a proper rite of passage;)

Maybe I'll shoot with my left hand just to be safe! Least I won't lose my dominant hand!

Reloading is a slippery slope. Your bank account takes a beating as you "save money" making your own. Your back stock and credit card bill grows as you find "sales".

Welcome to the dark side

I am using starting loads of 4227 on these. 9gr.

Not sure if you need to go any lower. I don't have a chrono, but these are probably going 800-850. Pretty weak and soft shooting.

Thanks! I guess I did notice one thing, that I forgot to mention. Trace amounts of unburned powder. I think from the feedback I got, giving a tighter crimp may help that issue?

Sent from my Lumia 1520

Nope, 4227 does that.
Still, it gave you that result. Write the load down in 3 places, and carve it into the bench.
