Range Report For 681

I shot the 681 no dash no M stamp today. (If you want a laugh look at my post "I am an idiot" in The Lounge)

25 rounds 158gr FMJ flat nose. No FTF/FTE.

All shots fired DAO. 25 feet indoor range.

This pistol is a great shooter. But. I put Magnas on it since the box indicated it was shipped with them from the factory. I wasn't happy with how it shot with them. It kept moving up in my hand.

I took them off and put the target grips that came with it when I bought it back on. It looks better too IMHO.

I'll post another report with the target grips.

This is the only modern fixed sight revolver I own besides J frames, and it's spot on.

A great revolver. I thought I had mine sold, but the buyer backed, and after that I considered it a lucky break because I was having seller's remorse. I plan on keeping it. IMO, it's one of the prettiest guns ever made by S&W, along with the 581. I like the way it looks with the magnas, but the Herrett's Shooting Stars are much better for shooting. I am partial to fixed sight service revolvers.

rubber grips on Ebay. They don't make them anymore, and
can be hard to find.

They feel good in my hands, look good, and make the gun
easy to control even with hot loads.

I have a 581 and have been looking for a 681 but have been outbid on the ones I have seen.

Those grips look an awful lot like Pachmyer Signature Grips.

Those Uncle Mike's grips are designed by Craig Spegel. Highly sought after and hard to find. With good reason!

I, too, find the Magna's to be a bit small and lacking in control, kind of feels like I am trying to hold a broom handle. S&W Target stocks are a bit too big for my comfort. My preference is either Pachmayr Presentation stocks or Herrett's Shooting Star stocks, both fit me very well.

I have tried wood grips of all types, Magna, Target, Combat, with Tyler T grips and without, factory and after market. They look pretty but I hit so much better with rubber grips. My 681 with Pachmayr Gripper grips feel perfect in my hands and I hit my target every time. It’s almost effortless. I hit just as well with the Uncle Mike’s grips and I keep them around because I know they are sought after, and I’m sure the day will come when I have another K or L frame revolver to put them on.

I put on a set of Magna's on my 681 . They do take a bit of practice to get used to . I don't shoot 38 spl's in mine . It says " 357 magnum " on the side of the barrel and that is what it gets . I have shot some really " hot " loads and it's still nice and tight . Yes sir , they are great guns . Regards Paul
