Well, I made it to a local indoor range today to do some 50 yard testing with my new AR upper, complete with BCG/Charging Handle from Aero Precision, a 16" govt profile 1:9" twist Tactical Ambush barrel, and a 13" free float keymod hand guard from Parallax Tactical. I added my muzzle comp I had on the sport as well, which I got on amazon (it's similar to the Miculek comp from DPMS).

After wondering whether or not this was money well spent just to lighten up the gun and free float it, I was very reassured when I saw the results at the range.

My extremely technical shooting position:

My two best 5 shot groups @ 50 yards with American Eagle AR223 55 gr ammo (haven't measured them)

I'm very happy with the results. After 120 rounds down the tube I even had time left for some 25 yard groups with my Izhmash Biathlon 7-4 ;)

My best 5 shot group with Federal GMM .22lr

And a couple of 10 shot groups that surprised the hell out of me

Just curious, but why didn't you just free float the original barrel/upper?

Do you wanna sell me your old upper?? Let me know ASAP Thanks

I just finished my first full AR build and a light weight it IS NOT, the weight with a 10 round Magpul mag inserted is 9 lbs. 14 ounces. One big part of that mass is the 20 inch Shilen Barrel that weighs in at over 3 1/2 lbs. However, I was going for a Varmint Rifle and built for accuracy. Unfortunately the 50 yard indoor range local to me doesn't have a heating system that can keep up when it's below 20 degrees so it's going to be another week or three before I get to try it out.

As for your results, my eyeball estimate is you are grouping about 1/2 inch center to center, so that would certainly indicate that you did spend your money well. In addition there is the satisfaction in knowing that Yes, You Did Do That.

Tried out my new AR build today, best 5 shot group was 0.550 inch center to center at 50 yards. Considering I was using a 38 dollar Gun Show special 6 power scope with crosshairs about as big as a pencil at a range heated to bout 35 degrees that's not that bad.
