Got my Hammerli Model 103 Free Pistol back from Larry's Guns, after someone up there who knew what he was doing fixed that five lever set trigger. I wouldn't want to even look at that thing, let alone try to fix it. Took the pistol out yesterday with a box of CCI Pistol Match that I'd been hoarding for it. Bummer: only five of about 25 rounds would chamber enough so I could close the breech on them. Looks like the rim of the CCI round was fatter than the recesss cut in the breech. I was in a funk all yesterday.
Today I went out, taking with me a box of every kind of 22 I had, including some hi speed HPs. One after another, ALL chambered without any problem, including some Winchester and Federal bulk pack!! I've been walking on air ever since. Now I'll take some match ammo out to the range and learn how to shoot that thing.
The Hammerli is different to shoot than most pistols. Your wrist is bent down about as far as it will go, not upright like on a Model 41. The sight radius is 14 1/4 inches so if you've had a quart of tea with breakfast, as I had, the front sight is dancing a jig out there. The rear sight has a shallow 'U' shaped notch; leaves are replacable and i'll have to find one with a deeper, square notch, more to my liking. The pistol is difficult to shoot, too. I haven't got used to the set trigger and find it easy to jerk shots. The barrel is light, much lighter than that on either the Model 41 or the High Standard Supermatic that I cut my pistol shoting teeth on. I may try taping a couple of tire balancers under that elegant, octagonal barrel and see if that helps matters. I remember doing that once with a K 38 when I was young and had a strong arm from doing nothing but shooting for the previous four months. I managed to keep most of my shots in the black on a 25 yd pistol target, but the pistol with match ammo should keep them well within the X ring at 50 yds. I guess I've got a lot to learn, but it's going to be interesting. Right now I think I could shoot higher scores with my Model 41.
