I plan to have my 6" 586 rebarreled with a 4" one that I hope to get. I will have someone with the proper tools do this but is there anything I should know or ask. Any recomendations on someone in NE Kansas to do this. Thanks.

Be careful who you trust.
These days its not uncommon for a local to tell you that he has all the correct tooling to do revolver barrel work, only to find out he doesn't and is using "expedient" tools like shoving a hammer handle through the frame to twist the frame off.
Its also common for locals to not even know that part of a re-barrel is re-cutting and gaging the forcing cone.

My advice.... Be SURE... send the gun in to S&W to get a guaranteed top quality job.

With next day shipping, there is just no reason to chance ruining a good gun by NOT having the factory do the work. Send it to S&W.

Do I have to go through a gun smith to send it to the factory? Also do I have to do a background check to get it back?

You should be able to send yourself, but I'm sure you will need to do the background check on its way back. To be sure you should call S&W to ask those things, get a service number, and estimate on the work.

The last time I sent a gun via UPS it was almost $80.00 as it has to go next day air. I could not send it via USPS as I do not have an FFL. I will send my next gun through my dealer so it can go via USPS, and save about $60.00.

Marvin;

Send it to Jim Stroh to be shortened.. He will install one of his new S&W sights, with interchangable posts.. You will have an excellent combination, that will be worth more than a factory job at resale. I doubt the cost will be much more than a factory rebarrel..The sight alone is a work of art..
I posted pictures of a 686 I did a few months ago.. Maybe a search will bring it up..If you go to a dealer and have him send it USPS; it will cut the cost of shipping by about 50%..w/insurance..

P.S. while the barrel is off would be a good time to Taylor Throat it. You'll be very happy with the results..Many feel the 4 inch L Frame is the ultimate defensive revolver. It's my favorite.

Jerry, Why do you want him to have the rifling for a half-inch past the forcing cone removed , Which is what Taylor throating does.A barrel prepped with a proper crown and an 11 degree forcing cone is ideal.Plus to get a Taylor throat done will be more expensive and won't achieve much if any better results.

Ill give a little more info. The 6" bbl has been bulged about one inch from the muzzle from a round out of my progressive loader and of course that would have been one of the ultra rare times I was trying to empty the gun like Jerry Miculek (Sorry if I misspelled the name). This about made me sick. The 6" bbl seems good before the bulge so maybe cutting it back and installing one of then front sights would be a good option but how good do they match the blue after the cut?
My old bbl has the partridge front sight which I really like and the 4" has a red ramp which I figured on having milled off and the partridge installed. The gun has a little cylinder wiggle at the bolt which I would like fixed also. Ive owned this gun for 15 years or so and I dumb assed it and would like to have it fixed right as it deserves. Thanks guys. Good mechanics and accuracy are my main goals over carry mods or something like that.

Send it back to the factory. Get the bbl length of your choice while they're still available there. If your bbl is bulged, it's been trashed. Smith will also clean up your sloppy cylinder play and you can get it re-blued. It may cost as much as a new one but if you're partial to that gun its worth it.

Just my .02.

586 bbls are not available from S&W any longer.I called them about this a year ago. That was my first try to get it fixed but they said no go on the bbl so this irritated me and I went to the pawn shop and found a like new 6" Dan Wesson 15-2 on clearance for $250.00 I could not pass up. But I want to fix the 586 and have patience to get it done.

Hello Aussie;
It is just another option, since the barrel would be removed to do the shortening, crowning, and sight installation.
Taylor Throating is a very good upgrade. He seems to be interested in making the revolver "top shelf". Forcing cones are archaic and aren't used much in quality target revolvers.. forcing cones begin upsetting and distorting the projectile, when it is least supported; while in transition from the cylinder to the barrel.. Taylor Throats allow the projectile to enter the barrel freely and only engage a gentle 1-1/2 degree leade angle while fully supported; this does not overly distort, or change the center of gravity of the bullet. Leading is almost completely eliminated, and accuracy gains are often substantial.
As for the bluing and sight question...The barrel is always re blued; Jim's sights have inter-changable blade inserts..ramp/post,etc..

Take care
Jerry
