I haven't yet learned to move post, so I'll just restate;
I received an email from a guy questioning whether it was a wise idea to say that I was in possession of S67252 (looking to buy S67253). The email was short, but I gather he was concerned about my being able to maintain a strategic advantage in acquiring a consecutive pair. I guess my thought was to remain completely "up front" about it and let things develop as they will.
How about it, folks? I think I'd like to have a few others weigh in with their opinions on the matter, if any are so inclined.
I'll be watching.

I guess I just want to know if I did something dumb. I do notice that a lot of the time, serial numbers are given with the last few digits as X's or O's, but seem to fully cited about as often. Does it matter much?

Some folks are shy about posting full serial numbers - they're concerned about someone using the serial number to report a gun stolen (never heard of this actually happening, though), or just don't want the information out there.

I'm not concerned about it myself. I've posted full serial numbers, and photos with the serial numbers completely visible.

I don't think you did anything dumb.

I'd be fearful that someone would report your gun stolen, leaving you at worst with legal troubles and no gun, and at best with a lot of trouble and headache. I haven't heard of this happening, but you never know.

I post my serial numbers with the last two digits xx out. If someone thinks that's silly, so be it. It's a free country.

In your case, to accomplish what you're hoping to accomplish, you had to post the full s/n.
Otherwise, you would say
"I have s/n S672xx and I want to buy S672xx+1." Good luck with that!

You may have hedged your bets a little bit being just a little disengenuous and saying
"I want to buy S67253 since it used to belong to an old friend."
(Or "that is the number my astrologer told me to buy" or the like).

Buy the way, why not double your chances and say you would likewise be interested in S67251?

Well, you know, I thought of that, too, but 253 is the one that shows up in Bill's database. If the owner of S67251 emails me, I'll talk to him/her, too! ;-)
