Real guns that look like toys

I saw a story on the local evening news tonight where the Police are warning people about real guns made to look like toys. Seems there have been a couple of drug raids around the country recently where it was found that the bad guys have put orange tips on AKs, ARs, etc. in the hope of confusing Police.
I did a bit of searching and came up with these stories.

I'm sure most of us are aware of the recent incident where a Police Officer mistakenly shot a boy with a toy gun.

Of course we've all seen various firearms refinished in bright colors or humorous styles such as the famous KalasniKitty. Many have been posted here on this forum.

It was the fact that this was on the evening news that got me to thinking about this. Could this be an opening for possible new bans? Bans on colored guns? Bans on toy guns? Bans on guns that look a certian way? Oh wait! That last one has been done already. How'd that work out?

While I'm all for supporting and protecting our Police, this seems like opening a very large can of worms.
You have the safety of Police to consider.
You have the ingenuity of the criminals that seems to know no bounds.
But there's also the right of people to express their own tastes and individuality through there personal property.
And should kids be prevented from playing Army or Cops & Robbers because they can't have toy guns or worse, might get shot for playing with them?

Maybe I'm overthinking this. Perhaps it will never go beyond a small story on the local news. But we all know how the antis love to latch onto anything that may further their cause. Banning guns or toys based purely on their appearance is a standard in their playbook.

What are your thoughts on the subject?

Wish it was that simple. Very easy to second guess the split second decisions and actions of the officers in any situation. I am particularly amused by the pink and purple handguns that I see at gun shows and in LGS gun cases. Ban, nah. Bad guys can buy paint if they want to get that little delay in reaction time from the cop.

Adults should know this, and kids should be taught. Don't point any gun or gun look alike at anyone. But expect bad things to happen if you point it at an officer. Now I will build in an exception for kids in their own backyards playing army or cops and robbers. But I am thinking kids these days don't do that with all the online multi-player video games. Shoot your buddy in the comfort of your own home in realistic HD.

Before I begin and offend anybody I'm NOT making a judgement, I'm simply stating facts of where I live.

Where I live, the local PD has shot people with spoons, smartphones, brake pads, butter knives, ect or no weapon at all - so it doesn't really matter what color the firearm is or isn't, if it even looks like a firearm or whatever.

Again, these are facts.

Spoons and Butter knives not weapons eh? I would respectfully disagree with you friend. I have another item that qualifies for weapons sir,.... me. I'm large, active, and could, at least theoretically do you grave bodily injury or death if so inclined. This is not an, " I'm tougher than you stuff ", this is life. EVERY contact a policeman has is an ARMED contact and why you ask? He or she is carrying a firearm, Baton, Pepper Spray, Taser, etc etc. People are beaten to death every day so if some outclasses me physically and it appears that my firearm or other weapon is being lost, the situation has escalated. You think on that.

Where did I say anything was or wasn't a weapon? I didn't.
Where did I say anything about physical size? I didn't.
I simply stated FACTS.

Fact: Albuquerque Police Department has shot people with spoons, butter knives, brake pads. Those are facts. Simply stated facts.

Don't believe me. Search them yourselves. It doesn't change my factual statement.

I didn't make judgements as to right, wrong or whatever. I stated facts. If you all feel the need to add your own narrative, that's on you.

If you want to put me on ignore for stating facts, that says more about you than me.

OK, so police make mistakes. Some for better reasons than others. Usually this occurs during highly stressful situations. Every good LEO hates this as much as anyone else. Saying a guy was shot with a spoon or brake pads is leaving a whole lot out of the story.



Fact: far more people are dead because of medical mistakes. Most of them don't occur during high stress situations. The average Dr is far more educated and trained than your average police officer. Yet, I see very few protests or riots over medical mistakes.

I am not sure one of the resent events that caused a lot of public out cry was wrong or a mistake. I am amazed at how a large group of people with a FEW of the "facts" can come to the conclusion that the LEO was wrong.

Plus, how many have walked in his shoes?
