Really enjoying my guitar lessons

In looking for a smaller bodied guitar are there any advantage's to a 12 fret? I see quite a few fingerstyle blues players using them. From what I understand it will allow the use of a little bit heavier strings with the feel of lighter strings on a 14 fret. I guess it also gets the low end of the neck closer to your body and that would make it easier to span 4 frets and such.

Scale length affects string tension. If the guitar is properly set up you can put tow cables on it. SRV used .013 to .056 on his Strats. That's heavier than what stock dreadnaughts are shipped with.

Access to higher frets is a good thing.

I hadn't really thought about access to higher frets. I guess at this point it really doesn't matter for what I'm looking for. I just like to keep my good guitar in the case when I'm not using it and want something I can just leave on a stand in the living room. If the dog knocks it over I won't cry too much.

I retired last year at 58, and decided to learn to play guitar. I find I now have greater focus and patience than when I was younger. I have kept with it for a year now. I stink a little less every day. I have read that it is good for mental health to play music, as all quadrants of the brain light up when doing so.

Maybe you are looking for a sound or vintage, but you can get a LOT of amp these days for a little money. I got a Spider amp for about 80$ and the thing had effects coming and going to get all kinds of sounds. It was amazing, when many years ago for almost the same money you could get a Sears Norma amp with a tone knob.

The modeling amps have gotten very good over the last few years, The Boss Katana is the industry standard at the moment. Good for at home low volume practice, big enough for small gigs.

If you are old school like me and insist on that real tube tone, Monoprice and Bugera have small tube amps that can connect you to the gods for not a lot of money.

You sound just like me. I don't play well at all but it's getting better all the time. I'm still slow with my cord changes and spend a bunch of time just going from cord to cord trying to land all my fingers in the right place at the same time. Right now the C cord is my biggest problem. I haven't even tried to tackle some of the harder cords especially barr cords. Then there is this up the neck stuff that Rusty talks about.:confused:

Yep, the better players play past the 3rd fret, I need to stay in the 1-3 fret area. :-)

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I'm finding things that sound simple can be a real challenge. I'm trying to train myself to go from a D to a C and landing my ring finger first or all fingers at the same time. I tend to want to put the index finger down first and that makes everything else too rushed. The index finger really wants to come way off the fingerboard. I'm trying to lift and pivot as one movement.

Like shooting stances, golf swings and holding a fork there is no 'one way'. With practice your fingers will get to where you want them to go.

I know it's an extreme example but Django only had the use of his left index and middle fingers and we both know what a savant he was.

Yea, I broke my left wrist when I was a kid and it was set crooked. When I pointed this out to my teacher he told me to watch some Django videos. Pretty impressive stuff even if he had all his fingers. If you want to do something bad enough you will get it done.
