Really like this 617

I bought a 4inch 617 earlier this year and I just have to say it gets better and better each time I shoot it! It shoots real straight, now I just need to work on consistent elevation.

If I could only keep one of my Smiths (other than a carry gun) it would be my 617. That, a brick of ammo and my DS10 speedloaders and loading blocks is a great recipe for a fun afternoon!

They are great revolvers. One of my favorite S&W's.
On a scope, I bought one (6 inch) awhile back, and it had a scope on it. It was a red dot scope. It shot pretty good with the scope, but I just could not warm up to it.
Either you like scoped revolvers or you don't. I guess that I don't.

The trick is to have identical revolvers, one scoped and one iron sighted. Then you have the best of both worlds!

It is a great revolver all by itself. But I think that many also love the fact it pairs so well with another of the best revolvers, the 686.

Just got back from putting 100 rounds thru my 617. I bought it (used) about a month and a half ago and have been doing that about 5 days a week since.
I have wondered a few times if I shouldn't just get rid of my center fires and reloading equipment and supplies and just go .22. I could shoot the .22 the rest of my life on the proceeds!!

What's it worth?

I just bought a 617-6. It is clean and locks up tight. I haven't shot it yet, hopefully this weekend. New they are about $700, so what should I have paid for it?

By the way, this is my first post. I just joined. I've been reading posts for several months and just decided to join!

I bought the 617-4 in my post above at a Fort Worth gun show for $700. The price was $625 plus tax plus CC fee, as I didn't have enough cash with me and it would have cost me almost that much for parking and admission to come back the next day.

You did good! With the price of new 617's climbing beyond what an average person would spend on "just a .22", used 617's are becoming harder to find and more expensive when you do.
I was fortunate to have bought two of them for $350/$400 a while back but those days are gone. No doubt I could make good $ IF I decided to sell. Not likely though.
The 6" is getting scoped very soon and The 4" is just too sweet in the hand to put it down.

Now if I could just find a 8 3/8" for $450 !

Even better, the 617, 686, and 16 make a great trio. I just wish they had made the 16 in stainless (and I wish I could make better pics).

I only have the factory rubber (which I like), but the classic Ahrend's look amazing.

Shot my 617 in a steel plate match today. Some where amazed at a 10 shot revolver. Although many there were shooting Ruger Marks, I had a
great time shooting my 617!
