Lurking for awhile, I fear i have become infected. I just aquired a mdl. 17-6 with a.160 rear blade, it shoots about 6" high at 25yds, with the sight as low as it will go. What replacement blade height do I need?

Thanks Dan

While I cannot answer your question, you will need to specify the barrel length for someone to give you the correct sight blade height. I had the same problem with a 4" Model 67 - shooting high about the same amount as your gun. I contacted Smith & Wesson and they responded that I needed a .106 (the incorrect sight blade was a .146, as I recall).

Is the front sight pinned? I don't know for sure on 17's but 617's have oddball sight heights. .167 front and .126 rear I think. The rear notch is so shallow it gives a lousy sight picture. To use a .160 rear (it has a deeper notch) I used a .228 front cut down to .200. Much better sight picture and the heights work out well.

tomcatt51 has the better idea. At least some 17s have pinned front sights. Maybe they all do. The sides of your sight may have been polished making the pin hard to see.

Factory runs a .146 rear.

I think I'd put a .126 on it. This will make your run the blade up instead of bottoming it out.

The FAQ will tell you what you need to do to swap it out, if your not sure.
Also there is a formula on just what you ask.

The formula says a .12 inch adjustment, but I wouldn't go that extreme.

Handguns should be held and fired with a 6 o'clock hold (at least is how I do things):) ....

The guys suggesting a taller front are telling you the best way to go . In ppc for dist revolver we use the taller rear and then a taller front and you really get a much better sight picture than the normal shallow rear. Most from the factory wont have the pin hole drilled ,so you may want to send it to S/W or any decent gunsmith could install it for you.You will see its worth it and you will have some elevation adjustment left in your gun to compensate for whatever ammo you use.
