Which would have the most negative effect on the value of my 57, leaving it with the original barrel which has been Magnaported or (assuming one could be found) replacing the barrel?

I am not sure about barrel replacement but MP KILLS
the value for originality. I recently saw a Colt Python that was
about perfect and it could only get $1200 where I believe
it would have been $2 grand if not MPd. Pete

It's been my experience that aftermarket Mag-na-porting hurts the value, unless you find a buyer who would have had it ported anyway. Good luck with that!

I doubt anyone would ever know the barrel was replaced if you can find the original length and correct vintage. Having said that, I doubt you'll recover the costs. I had S&W swap out a barrel for me about four years ago. They charged $75 to do the work and shipping to them cost me about the same. I've got to believe you'll pay $100-$200 for the barrel (if you can find one), so it would have to add over $250 -$350 to the value to make it worth the trouble.

I suggest you enjoy it for what it is or sell it for what you can get.

I agree with what has been said,The only way Mag-Na-Porting does not hurt the value is if it was "factory" ported. The porting was not done at Smith,After the gun was built is was sent to Mag-Na-Port before going to the distributor.

The biggest problem I have with it is I cannot use it to shoot the duty revolver match with it being ported. The main thing I shoot is the LSW at about 900 FPS. The porting is not really a benefit. And we all know about shooting from retention with a ported barrel.

I lent it to my BIL when I was transferred to Germany. He had it ported thinking he was doing me a favor.
