That sounds about like a deal I got in the mid 70's on a Ruger security six 4" blue. Brand new out the door taxes inc. was less than a hundred dollars. Some low dealing dcum stole it off of me or I would still have it. That was one sweet shooter.

I was born in 1941. My mother saved everything. After the folks died I found a hospital receipt for about $45 for my brith. I think mom had to stay something like 3 or 4 days!

re: obstetric costs: Total hospital AND obstetric pre/post delivery cost for my kids was $400 in the late 60s.

I bought my Model 58 for $81.00 in 1966 and than included a box of Remington 210 grn JSP's. That's because I couldn't afford a Model 19 at $125.00

Them wuz the days.

My wife and I rented a little house from my grandfather when we were first married. We were still living there when my oldest son was born.

I went by to take Grandpa the rent one day just a little while before he was born (1984), and mentioned that I'd already paid the doctor, and had to finish paying the hospital their part. I think it was about $1500 total, best I remember. He stopped, looked at me and thought for a minute. Then he said, "Son, I don't believe I've got a hundred dollars in all seven of mine." :D

As for guns, I still get nauseated when I think about all those Smiths and Pythons that I passed on years ago for a fraction of what they're going for now. Oh well, such is life.

Yes, $100 gun, 25 cent a gallon gas, sounds good,
BUT it took me a week then to make what I now make per hour.

That hits the nail on the head. You can't equate today's dollars with 1960's dollars. Actually, it would be more accurate to equate today's dollars with '60s DIMES.

You could get a gallon of gas then for about 25 cents; times ten gets you $2.50.

You could buy a car for about two grand; times ten gets you $20 grand....

If you want to be exact, use an on-line inflation calculator, but times ten is usually pretty darn close.

Guns vs. Kids....

I got my first S&W in 1973. A 6" Model 10. $119.50. Drove 120 miles to get it and stood in line for a couple of hours to put it on lay away .... Smiths were pretty hard to find then.... a Model 14 was $235 and unobtainable. By the time I got to the head of the line they were all gone....

My kids on the other hand began arriving in 1978 and were pretty easy to come by..... but the first cost me $750. Mercy Hospital had me on the "Installment Plan" for the next 5 years....

I paid off the Smith first.

Still have the Smith and the Kids.... Looking back, the Smith was easier to feed.... I had half a box of ammo from that 1973 purchase... the kid ate me out of house and home for 30 years...

Back in that time, I was makin' $150 a month and found as a cowhand.

Got me a job as a POliceman at $394.00 a month before deductions. I was in fat city. Then I got married and that took care of my spending money.

My first handgun was my Browning High Power, paid $110 for it new in 1968-I was in the Army at the time. First rifle, my M1917 Winchester, paid $80 in late 1967.

My father bought a Tru-Temper 12 guage side by side when he was 15. He put it on layaway at the local hardware. It took him several months to pay it off. He is 90 years old now. I still have the shotgun. I occasionally remove the buttplate and unroll the 75 year old bill of sale that he put in there when he bought it. It cost $14.
