They are a modified design to fire DAO and as closely as possible imitate the trigger pull of DAO revolvers. Speculation is that they were designed for agencies that wanted to transition from revolvers to semi autos and make that transition as easy as possible.

The 53/54 and almost all other S&W "DAO" guns, plus platforms like Glock and Kahr, share the same fundamental characteristic of a partially energized firing system with no restrike. It doesn't make a squat of difference whether that system is hammer or striker fired.

A DA revolver and a 3914DAO have similar trigger weight, stroke distance, and have "restrike" (or advancement to next round for the wheelgun) capability. They are far more analogous to each other than the other comparison case.

i just went and dry fired the 6946 DAO. The first pull cocks the gun and drops the hammer, the second pull is dead (action didn't cycle)

dry fired the 3914DAO, The first pull cocks the gun and drops the hammer, and so does every trigger pull after that.

granted, 6946 isn't a 53/54 but it's widely accepted as typical S&W DAO. The action definitely operates differently on the 3914DAO.

Yup- I am not quite where the contention is coming from on this topic. Facts are facts.

S&W may have developed the XX4X, XX5X and XX8X to have "revolver-esque" consistent triggers, but they are far from the specs on the 3914DAO, which comes close as you can get to matching a DA-ONLY wheelgun. It's really not an arguable point.
