They are a modified design to fire DAO and as closely as possible imitate the trigger pull of DAO revolvers. Speculation is that they were designed for agencies that wanted to transition from revolvers to semi autos and make that transition as easy as possible.
The 53/54 and almost all other S&W "DAO" guns, plus platforms like Glock and Kahr, share the same fundamental characteristic of a partially energized firing system with no restrike. It doesn't make a squat of difference whether that system is hammer or striker fired.
A DA revolver and a 3914DAO have similar trigger weight, stroke distance, and have "restrike" (or advancement to next round for the wheelgun) capability. They are far more analogous to each other than the other comparison case.
