Received a gift...puzzled

And for the first time ever, I'm not sure if it was meant as a joke or a serious gesture. Either way, I'm glad I was in high enough regard to have received a gesture of appreciation. But I am wondering if anyone else here has ever been given a gift and not known if it was a gag or not.

It was my secret sister from church, so I tend to think it was not a joke.

Anyway...that gift you weren't sure was a joke or not...tell us about it. What was it? Who gave it to you? What did you end up doing with it?

Oh, and in case you're wondering, it was a Christmas CD.

If the CD contained any of the torturous "pop" Christmas music I'm forced to suffer at many public venues this time of year, it wasn't merely a joke, but a cruel and sardonic joke. I might be able to overlook the classic choral arrangements and traditional hymns, but the likes of "Sock It To Me Santa", "Run,Run, Reindeer", "Grandma Got Run(ned?) Over By A Reindeer", and other inane Xmas music is maddening. Any attempt to "jazz up" or overproduce such simple songs as "Frosty the Snowman", or "Blue Christmas", and any Christmas music recorded by Michael Jackson, ought to to be grounds for deporting anyone involved into the hands of the music-hating branches of the Taliban and Al-Quaeda, in the "tribal areas" of Pakistan... We atheists can be tolerant, but only up to a reasonable point...

I'm puzzled as to why you would consider a Christmas cd to be a gag gift.

I think it might be a joke because it's the Susan Boyle album. If someone who knows me gave it to me...it would be meant as a joke (and I'd get it, i;d give it to myself as a joke, if that makes sense to you). But it might be one of the older ladies who loves Susan and wants to "share"

I am very, very picky about music (30 years performing and 8 total years of formal music school after high school can do this to a soul) and my Christmas taste, known to most of my friends, runs to extremes and avoids the mainstream...5 or so centuries old I like a lot, and the modern non trad off the wall stuff, without much passion for the inbetweens and mass produced. Just because I've done most of the mainstream ad nauseum, it has lost much of its lustre.

Gimme some Riu Riu Chiu or Pat A Pan, Sussex Carol, etc, by a period ensemble or "Don't stand so close to the Christmas tree" and then we're in business. Susan Boyle? yawn, yuck. I suppose she's a good enough singer, but that's just not my speed.

It did totally make my day when a little kid sang "Jingle Bells and Popcorn" in class last week. but he's 7 and a hugger. Susan Boyle is...Susan Boyle.

anyway, was not complaining about a gift--either way, someone thought of me and that's nice. But I was wondering if anyone else has ever gotten a gift and not known if it was a joke or not...because until this morning it was always clear to me.

No, considering the giver(s) I could always tell if the gift was thoughtful or if someone who didn't know my taste just felt like they needed to wrap something up for me.

I am a bluegrass fan and I like BG gospel and BG Christmas music, but the only Christmas music I own is by Mannheim Steamroller. It is playing now.
