I was able to get this 2nd model 44-40 #30161 on this recent RIA

There were a couple other Maxwell revolvers I was hoping to score but I decided to prioritize this 2nd model. I had picked up its sequential sibling #30162 earlier this year on forum.
Stocks on both are not numbered and I do need to letter them.

The take home price was brutal. So I had to pass on the 2 modified 36/44 HD Targets. Which I hope they now belong to members here.

I bid on line. I was able to save a few bucks on shipping. I had an appt in Dallas (I live in OKC) and was able to stop at RIA to pick up the gun. Just presented my C&R.

Impressive facility. This would account for a portion of where the fees are going.

Wow, nice snag Mike! I didn't know the 2nd model was produced in .44 Winchester! I hope your other one didn't set you back as much as this one did. Also, I can barely believe those two .38/44s brought the money they did, being so modified as they are. Cool Target HDs though.

BTW, who is Jon Maxwell?

Thanks!
The first 44-40 I got here on this forum was quite reasonable. It's those dang RIA fees that hurts so much.
I am not sure who Jon Maxell is other than RIA refers to him by name and he collected a ton of cool S&Ws. Honestly I have yet to see a gun he sold that I did not like.

Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector Revolver in .44-40 WCF | Rock Island Auction

At $5581, with Texas sales tax of 6.25%, you are looking at about $5930. A nice revolver like that one, if in .455 Webley, would be at least a quarter of the hammer price, this being for a Hand Ejector Second Model, these days in that condition. A 5" barrel is uncommon, as is the .44-40 caliber. RIA is overpriced, so I avoid them and miss out on some nice toys, but, realistically, where are you going to find another one, and for how much less.

If you want to reduce your purchase price a bit, you can sell the less common pre mid 1910 non medallion concave stocks on this revolver and replace them with the more common, less costly, and appropriate stocks with medallions.
