Nice! Nearly all 686 revolvers have a full length lug under the barrel. I believe that is a unique and desirable gun. Is is a 686-5?

Actually, I see the keys in your picture, so it must be a 686-6. Others will probably have some info for you. Nice gun.

Thank you very much for the info. Now I know what a 1/2 lug is and what the 6 stands for.

I think its a beautiful handgun and I'm look forward to shooting it.

One more possibly dumb question.

Why do soo many pictures of hand guns have a piece of wood or something in the trigger??

Is it to prop them up for the picture?

It's part of a diligence to safe handling protocol. Especially if & when photographing.

If you're asking when your's was made there'll be a date on the box's label, assuming it's for your gun, & also on the fired case envelope if it was made before they stopped doing that.

.

Thank you.

I assumed the fired casing wasn't with the gun in the case but is was behind the foam along with some papers and brochures. The envelope is still taped shut.

The gun has been fired a lot and I'm guessing that my brother possibly carried it as his service revolver before he started carrying a Colt 1911.

It looks like 11/12/03

thanks again

...This is a new to me S&W 686. I'm sure you already know what it is.....
We could guess, but it would be a lot easier if you told us. On the box label there's a 6-digit number called the product code. It likely begins with "16". That's the unique identifier for that particular variation.

So..... what is that number?

Sorry, I wasn't aware of that. The product number is 164284.

Thank you :)

164284 was a limited issue "Stocking Dealer Exclusive". These were special guns reserved for those S&W distributors that met certain contractual provisions. I've never seen a number published, but if I had to guess I'd say fewer than 400 were made.

In some respects it reminds me of the Mountain Gun concept. Except the 164284 has a heavier barrel profile. It's not super rare or astronomically valuable, but to a buyer that knows what it is, it probably carries a 10-20% premium over an otherwise identical Model 686-6.

I really had no idea what it was specifically when I got it other than it was a .357 mag and I liked it.

I'll keep it for sure. I'm going to put a few rounds thru it this weekend.
