Question:
Is there any real reason to replace a perfectly good composite recoil spring guide rod with a metal one? It's a Model 410. New old stock. Thanks for any help.

I don't see any advanage to it. I have used the heavy steel rods in my target 1911s' for a little added muzzle weight, but can't say that they reduce recoil or improve function by any amount.

You can replace it. Usually the reason is to add "barrel weight". Guide rods are sometimes made of tungsten to maximize the weight added.

Plenty of reason not to.
Based on range observations, aftermarket rods fail more than stock unless you buy a very high quality piece.
It is a simple matter to buy a stock recoil assembly for a few dollars and replace it 5,000 rounds/ 5 yrs.
The nylon rods have a little "give" and don't batter the rest of the gun.
The flat-wound spiral springs on the stock units are superior to the piano wire often supplied with cheaper aftermarket pieces.
IDPA does not allow weighted recoil rods.

Thanks for reminding us of the idiotic rules IDPA has.

You're welcome.
After I bought it, USPSA outlawed my bone-stock Paraord Tac Five from Production Division because of the taper on the outside of the grip opening.

Ain't sanctioning rules grand!

Thanks for the info guys. If I was going to replace it (which now I'm not) I would have bought a factory 411 metal one.
But, now I don't have to!
