Recommendation for .38 Special Ammo (?)

... and talking about rifles - I just lucked out on a new unfired .22 Remington model 552 BDL Speedmaster (2006). I'm gonna put one of those fancy EOTech holo sights on it, even if I can't afford it, so that I can shoot the dickens out of inanimate objects like cans and stuff. I'll post a picture soon on another thread.. yippee! :D

Pete,
If you don't mind ordering online Ammo-To-Go has 158gr LRN Prvi Partizan .38 Special ammo in stock for only $12.95/50. (I can't believe I said the "only $12.95" and ".38 Special" in the same sentence) Since it's for practice only there's nothing wrong with a LRN bullet and that's the cheapest ammo I've seen in a long time. I know we will never see $6/50 ever again but considering I've seen over $21/50 this year $12.95/50 isn't so bad I guess, and that was also practice ammo, not SD ammo. I also never thought I would see the day where .38 Special SD ammo would cost over $1/round but it does now...

Even though I seldom shoot these days, I'm almost tempted to start hand loading my own - but, for me, I don't believe it's worth the time and effort.

I have recommended reloads from Mastercast (Home Page) for years, and still do -- if you have been saving your brass. Right now, due to the current insanity, Mastercast cannot provide their product unless you send spent brass of the same type and number. (Do that by USPS Priority Mail. I send them a thousand spent cases in a nine buck box, with room for more). I have tried four of their range loads (at least 500 rounds each), 9X19 115 gr lead truncated cone, .38 sp. 100 gr LWC, .38 sp. 148 gr LWC and .38 sp. 158 gr LSWC. All are hard cast and none have ever leaded my handguns. All are dead smack reliable. The .38 sp. 100 gr LWC feels and sounds almost like a .22, yet is accurate as far out as I shoot (10 yards). From my 637 snubby, this load tends to tear strips from some targets (NOT keyholes), but from my 4" 686+ it does not do this. I am a senior geezer, but have no injury/arthritis problems with my hands -- just with the thinning of my skin. I have standardized on the 148 gr LWC. I shoot it weekly, mostly from my 686+ but when I want to punish myself, I use my 637 -- with a big bandaid on the web between thumb and hand.

For price and reliability, you cannot beat Mastercast -- if you have brass to exchange.

is the non jacketed .38 special ammo from mastercast very "smokey"?

Georgia Arms..

I have also had good luck with reloads from Georgia Arms, comes loose in GI ammo cans.

As i responded to Vitoland's PM, I don't find Mastercast's hardcast reloads to be particularly smoky, about the same as the Speer Gold Dots I occasionally shoot. But I belong to a very well-ventilated indoor range, and that certainly has effect on my opinion, not to mention my lungs.

The 686 is build like an M1 tank. I never fired any 357 magnums through the various 686s I've owned, but I bet that from 4" and longer barrels and rubber grips enclosing the back strap the recoil wouldn't be that bad.

We used to issue the 681/Pachmayers and Federal 125 gr full house magnums. You'd be wrong about that recoil-at least by the end of a day at the range (several hundred rounds). During semi-annual qualification, I'd intentionally fire the last 14 rounds from 25 yards using my support hand. After 36 rounds strong hand with a strong grip, my right hand had had all the fun it could stand. IIRC, we fired about a 20 round warm-up before qual at that time.
