What is your recommendation for a gun to have beside the bed for things that go bump in the night? What is the weapon and how is it setup?

What do you keep beside the bed?

I keep a shockwave 12 gauge loaded with 7 mini buckshot shells. The shorter shotgun is easier to use in close spaces. With the mini shells the recoil is not bad at all and the penetration of walls will not be as bad as it would with full size 12 gauge. At across the room ranges the mini shell would be very effective. A 20 gauge shockwave would work very well also but one would have to use standard shells as I have never seen any 20 gauge mini shells. However keep in mind mini shellsl may be very hard to find. I stocked up over a year ago and have not seen any in a long time.

I keep a Glock 19 loaded with 15 in the magazine and one in the chamber in a fingerprint safe on my bedside stand. It has a tac light mounted on it, and a red dot sight co-witnessed with the trijicon night sights.

I chose this for the bedside stand because I've had this pistol for almost 10 years, and not once has it failed to fire, or jammed. I also chose it for the high capacity and because it has a rail to mount the light.

I don't shoot it for enjoyment. I do practice with it, but for my fun range trips I like to shoot revolvers more. However, when it comes to bump in the night, I want reliability, capacity, and enough power to put down a bad guy. The fingerprint safe is because we have grandkids here a lot, so it's the best way to have fast access and yet not have a tragic accident.

I keep a Jack Russell Terrier on the bed, (first year of his life I only fed him broken glass and he slept in a gunny sack full of rattlesnakes). A Glock 35 converted to 9x19 chuck full of 9BPLE and sporting an Olight Valkyrie serves as backup to the dog.

With two of here and both having their own bedside we have two.

What Lonestar and Rusty said..keep it simple and user friendly.

1. I dream alot...wild stuff...so the pistol is NOT next to the bed but in a sock drawer.
2. My wife does not shoot a lot and I'm not always there, so I have .38sp revolvers stashed around. Point, pull trigger, pistol goes bang.
3. A couple of tactical 12 gauges in different closets in case I run out of bullets!.

I recommend this. If you share your bed with a significant other i.e. female in my case make sure that she knows how to operate and can shoot your bedside firearm choice adequately. Or better yet, have a matching pair that you both have access to during bedtime.

That’s our current setup. We have matching S&W 380ez’s in vaultek sliders, mine with a Surefire weapon light/laser.

Unless you and everybody else likely to need to use it are gun people I recommend a medium frame .38 special revolver. Adequate power. Easy to operate. Not a ridiculous overpenetration threat. Flashlight. Maybe even electronic ear muffs handy.

I have a very bright olight flashlight on the nightstand. I’ve wondered about having earpro handy; I have enough tinnitus from larger projectiles as it is.

The goal of my bedside gun is to fight off immediate threats and get to my PS90 if there’s multiple threats. Been thinking about a revolver and part of asking this question is to get see if this might be a place to scratch that itch.

That would cover things quite nicely.

As to earmuffs... If I am startled into DEFCON 1 the last thing I will be thinking about is ear protection.
