Boy needs a graduation present. He has a bolt action .22LR that he uses for bench rest target shooting at 50 and 100 yards. He had an el cheapo 4x scope on it.

He wants a better scope, with about 6x magnification.

What can y'all recommend , without breaking the bank? Would 8x be even better?

My Air Force issued Winchester 52D had a 20x fixed power scope.
Corrective lenses required me to shoot any sight.
The only time I was out pointed or out Xed, shooting prone, was by a 12 year old in '68 at El Monte.
He was my team mate in a fun 50/100 yd competition.
We outscored the Masters as well.
We both had great teachers and paid attention. :D

I have a T-36 on hand these days so I can see the holes without a spotting scope.

Just throwing that out there as you might find a good used scope at 20x.

It sounds as if your son is not shooting competitively with a match rifle, so 6X would be plenty adequate for 50 and 100 yard target shooting or small game hunting. I'd look at a Leupold 6x36mm if they still make them. He won't outgrow such a scope and it can be mounted on a centerfire rifle down the line if necessary.

For benchrest target, I'd suggest a lot more magnification.

A used Weaver or other US scope is a great option, if you can find one.

On my Tikka T1x, I'm using a Mueller 8-32x44. It's a lower end optic, but it's got decent glass, tracks properly, and was just about the only thing I could find that had fine crosshairs and a target dot reticle. They can be had for under $300.

I'm still working on my technique, but I've had no complaints about the optic so far.

"Without breaking the bank" means different things to different people. What specific price range are you in?

Take a look at the entry level Leupold scopes. A 4 x 14 may provided the magnification he needs at both ranges. Vortex won't break the bank and IMO, they are equal to and may have a slight edge over the Leupold Freedom series.

I have a previously owned Leupold M8, fixed power 12 with target knobs on a Kimber Mod. 82 target rifle. It is everything that I could ask for at 50 and 100 yards.

If he is shooting Hunter Class, they are required a fixed 6x scope or Iron sights. I know Leopold made a M-8 target Adjustable Objective in 6x. It would have an unconditional Lifetime warrantee and they come with a selection of target & hunting reticles. It will run in the $350-400 range and worth every penny!

Vortex various are good scopes for the money too, if you budget can't handle the Leopolds!

Nikon had great scopes, and bargains abound, but there is no factory service!

If he is shooting Benchrest at 100 yards (.22 RF) he needs more power. The scope I used for 100 yard prone shooting was a 20X Unertle. Pay a little more for quality glass, it will pay off in higher scores. But check with the rules for any limitations on magnification.

I just put the Athlon on a .22 for my son, same one Boxhead is suggesting. I paid $109 for it but it was at a local store I do business with all the time.
I like this Athlon VERY much I would recommend it.
I also recently bought at a deal a Bushnell Nitro scope I don't recall what I paid but it was atleast twice what I gave for the Athlon.
Now I'm no Bushnell fan but this thing is NICE too, now it's a 2x7 with a 30mm tube, I'm a fan of 30mm tubes.
I also have a heavy barrel .22 that I put a Nightforce NXS 5.5x22 on now it's about $2200 so my range varies from time to time I'm not scared to put good glass on a rifle and sometimes don't care what it cost. I also don't sell or trade my great scopes. I will guns but not a quality scope.
I would also look at Rodman's post, if it tracks good... that target sheet pretty much speaks for itself! I may have to look those scopes up as well.

Whatever you purchase save some money for a GOOD set of rings, always odd when I see the cheapest, worst looking junk rings mounting a scope.

Love the old Unertle scopes. Had one on my old 98 Mauser action chambered in 22-250.

...as said above...what is the budget and my question is what rifle are we talking about...makes a big difference on any recommendation...

When I shot 22 matches I used Weaver T24 and a Sightron 24X. I was shooting against others using much higher priced and magnifications. Some of those guys spotting scopes cost more than my entire rig.

I had these scopes mounted on CZ and Anschultz rifles. I was always competitive with these combos.

Repeatability is what he’ll need. The elevation turret will see much use. Time and again it’ll need to return to the same spot. Parallax adjustment can be the difference between a bull and another X. X’ win matches.

My Taste

Personally, and I have good friends that would disagree, I like Bushnell and Vortex scopes for the money. I just sold one, and I am looking myself at a Savage B22 that I am looking to pair with a Vortex Crossfire II Rimfire, 2x7. The paralex is set at 50 yards, which for small target is fun. 1/4 MOA adjustments, and 3.9 " of eye-relief. My favorite skill building trick is to tie and apple to a string in front of a target at 100 yards. Fun. This will be the scope I try that with next.
