Recovered 642

A while ago I posted that a revolver of ours had been stolen out of my car while the car was in the garage.

I just got a call today that the gun was recovered during a drug raid in a town about 30 miles away. It will go thru the crime lab, and it may be a little while before it's returned, but it is good to know that it's off the street.

Thanks to the local police for their efforts, and thanks to those of you who offered advice.

Very lucky .. most guns are never recovered .. good to know its off
the street .. think I would be very relieved it couldn't be used in a crime now !!

Many years ago I had one of about 8-10 stolen handguns recovered a couple of years after the burglary. The insurance company that paid a fraction of the value to me at the time of the burglary (renters insurance) had to release it for me to get it from the police. The insurance guy I talked to wanted full retail value. I told him I would pay them what they had paid me, or they could keep it. He laughed and agreed, nothing ventured, nothing gained I guess.

Over the years I have had a number of firearms stolen (more than I like to remember). Several with my name engraved on them. To date, not one has been recovered.

There are some places where it is almost impossible to get your gun back from the police once it is recovered. One guy said it was so much trouble in Chicago to get his stolen M-36 back that the only reason he kept trying was just because of the principle. He finally got his gun back after a year and it was all beat up and the PD had sloppily engraved a bunch of ID numbers in the side of the frame.

My house was burgled, and one of the items stolen was a Star 30M. I reported the serial number at the time.

Many years later, 10+, the phone rang. It was the property officer of the PD of the city 40 miles away.

They had my 'property', I went there to claim it. They released the pistol and the magazine, but wouldn't give me the ammo - at least not that day. If I came back the next day they would give me the 15 rounds.

As far as I know, the PD still has that ammo.
