Red Dot Questions

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction if I've missed an important thread.

Understand, I'm new to this...

My head is spinning trying to understand scopes and red dots...

When it comes to the 15-22...can most red dots be used with a low mount or do our guns need the high mount?

If so, why?

This is the red dot that I'm looking at and am trying to get an understanding for what is required for the 15-22

I bought a TruGlo 30mm red dot scope at Gander Mountain for about $40. I added a riser to the top rail to mount the scope which also allows me to use the stock sights as well.

The stock on an AR style firearm is almost inline with the top of the rail. Low mounts makes it hard to get a proper cheek weld and align your eye with the middle of the optic. It's also nice to have it a certain height so you can use your iron sights through the optic while it's still mounted (co-witnessed).

Ok, that makes sense.

Now my next question is, what kind of high mount should I look into that doesn't look so stupid?

The one that is attached on the link is hideous...surely there are more aesthetic pieces.

I know it's more than your other RDS you posted but I use this one from Primary Arms on my 15-22 and use the same with the ADT mount on my AR. This mount provides a lower 1/3 co-witness.

Do you plan on running a magnifier in the future?

The cantilever mount puts the optic forward enough to get a magnifier behind it. If not there is an option for a non-cantilever mount on that page you linked.

I've thought about a magnifier in the future, I was just unsure of roughly what kind of distances a red dot could cover, effectively, versus a magnifier.

You also need to look into lower 1/3rd vs. absolute co-witness before selecting a riser if the ability to still use your irons interests you.

My red dot has two connection points so I got a 1/2" riser that is about 6" long from Bass Pro for $18 + tax. It gives me a 1/3 co-witness.

So, I'm a little confused on co-witness, and i'm pretty sure it's my own fault.

I ended up purchasing a 3/4" AR15 riser and an NCStar 4 reticle red dot and I cant seem to get it in a position that works properly.

Once I removed the rear iron I could get the red dot to match up with the front iron somewhat...but I'm still unsure about it.

Should i scrap the irons and attempt to sight it based on the dot alone?

Can you use the sights through the optic with it turned off?

If not, and you don't have folding sights, then just take them off. Or get the appropriate riser for your optic. Someone should be able to help with that.

Always sight the red dot in on paper. Lining the dot up with the irons will get you close if they're on the same level, but I sight mine in separately to be precise.
