Red dot sights

Are your questions particular to our handgun? I have a red dot but on a .357 Magnum N frame, my experiences won't do you much good unless they are regarding the sight itself.

I put one on a mount that hooks to the under rail and played around, made it heavy and didn't really work out

It is really made for fun plinking and a suppressor, in my opinion

Ruger 22/45 and M&P Pro Core

I have two pistols with "red dot" sights on them. One is my Ruger 22/45 which comes with a picatinny rail on top. I put a Tru-Glo red dot on it with two colors and four different crosshairs. It is very accurate and holds zero every time I've been to the range. I can pepper the bullseye with it all day long. My M&P Core had a Deltapoint and it works really well too. I find at my age I can shoot much better with a red dot sight than I can through the iron sights. Sorry if your asking about that particular pistol with a red dot. I can't help much there, but I can endorse using a red dot for target shooting.

I say go for it. .22 is already such a fun caliber to shoot, why not make it better by adding a red dot. I added a BSA optics red dot to my 22/45 lite and I love it. Although I do still like shooting with iron sights every once in a while....

I was thinking the same putting a red dot on my pistol with a mount that would make it switchable to other guns easy.. I was in Wallmart today and had seen a red dot open sight for $129 that looked nice and was very light.. It had a .5 MOA I think that's what it's called .. I asked about it and the kid pulled it out for me but knew nothing about it.. I looked through it and could not see a dot in the center of the holograph again I think that's what you call it.. I was thinking of it for my M&P .22 and AR 15! I think it was this one. Bushnell First Strike Reflex Red Dot Scope - Walmart.com

I looked throught it but could not see a center dot.. The kid said it didn't have to be turned on and could not tell me anymore about it.. What is the best way to test it out in the store ? What should I see? What should I look for.. Hope this also helps the OP too! Thanks! George

Probably didn't have a battery in it. (every one I've seen ship without the battery installed) and it's probably a 5 MOA, .5 MOA would be impossible to see;)(at least by me, I use a 7.5 MOA). I usually am not a fan of the lower priced optics for a pistol, but on a .22 it may not be a factor.

Bkreutz, Would this red dot be better suited for my AR?

Without knowing which one it's hard to say but generally centerfire pistols are harder on any kind of optics because normally they are attached to the slide which puts a lot of different shocks into the sight. A .22 (light recoil) and an AR (recoil only, not back and forth slide movement) are easier on a sight. (I'm not forgetting frame mounted optics for pistols, I left that angle out because they are a whole different thing). In a general sense, you get what you pay for. The cheaper reflex sights tend to lose zero or quit working altogether at an inopportune time, which isn't a big deal on a range gun, but it's really a bummer when you're shooting competition. (I don't use optics on EDC)

It's the Bushnell First Strike Reflex Red Dot Scope I'm looking at here:

Is there a better one a littel better for the same money if I limited it to one type of gun say the AR because I think it would be easer on the scope. I'll get one for the M&P .22 when I can afford a little more money but this way I'll have one squared away.. Use would be range out to 100yds and Home defence with in say 5 or less to 10 yds or so..

Red dot sight

Thanks for the responses. I was especially directing my question to the 22lr. It doesn't have an upper rail to mount the sight, and I was reluctant to use screws to mount a rail on the aluminum slide. I may just put a laser sight on the rail beneath the barrel.

There are many threads here about others who have mounted a small red dot on their M&P22. The results varied as to reliability, but most worked, if the sight was small and lightweight. There are mounts out there that go in the rear sight channel and work well.

I used this one for a while that mounts to the lower rail, but had to remove it to remove the slide for cleaning. It did hold zero quite well when re-installed, but I just decided I didn't need it and sold it.

Here is a video (not mine) of an M&P22 with a Burris Fastfire and a Speed Shooters Mount - Link to mount here-http://www.speedshooterspecialties.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=78_202&products_id=1146

Many less expensive aftermarket sights will also fit on the Burris mount.

Enjoy the video

This is what I have on my M&P22 now - my only problem was that the screws to mount the plate to the gun were too short and I had to find longer ones. Hard to find size- found on ebay.
Once that was solved - Mount and sight work great.

Sightmark Pistol Mount & Green Mini Shot Combo

I like the test setup so much that I will be upgrading to the Burris Fastfire Sight this year.
