Red River (Western)

I liked that the frail looking Montgomery Clift was in it. Tough guys, or guys who can handle themselves don't all look like, well, John Wayne in real life. Look at the real Kit Carson. John Ireland was also great in it. I always wanted to make a duplicate of his holster. Clift wore his gun around his knee. And who cares if they shoot guns not invented until seven years later.

Don't forget......

Don't forget "Hondo"

If we are sticking to John Wayne, 'The Shootist' was outstanding. I didn't give it much of a chance at first, but it got to be one of my faves. That's over 40 years old now. Old enough to qualify as an 'old movie', which we know are the best.:D

I know we continuously repeat ourselves, with this being most everyone's favorite topic, but "Unforgiven", "Outlaw Josie Wales", "Hombre', 'Tom Horn', The 'Man with No Name movies', ;Once Upon a Time in the West' and "Tombstone' were all worthy of mentions.

Red River was a good western movie, but it's not in my top 10.
Here are my favorites in descending order:

10. Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid. Sam Peckinpah movie rated R
starrring Kris Kristofferson as The Kid and James Coburn as
Pat Garrett.

09. The Good The Bad and the Ugly. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef,
and Eli Wallach.

08. The Outlaw Josey Wales. Clint Eastwood and chief Dan George.

07. Wild Bill, starring Jeff Bridges.

06. Once Upon A Time In The West. Henry Fonda stars as about the
baddest dude you will ever see in a western.

05. The Westerner. With Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. Walter
won the academy award for his role as Judge Roy Bean.

04. Lonesome Dove. A television mini-series with Robert Duvall and
Tommy Lee Jones.

03. A draw for number 3. Tombstone and Wyatt Earp.

02. Unforgiven. Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman.

01. The Shootist. John Wayne's last, and best in my opinion.
Playing an old gunfighter he goes to the doctor (Jimmy Stewart)
and finds out he has terminal cancer. In real life Wayne was
also dying of cancer.

Agree with 1,2,3,4 and 8 on your list. And I'll throw in The Big Country and High Noon.

Our favorite John Wayne western is The Cowboys. Although he starred in it it was one of the movies that was not the typical John Wayne movie where he is presented as all but infallible, best with fists and guns. He portrayed a rancher facing financial hardships if not getting his cattle to market, and even in the fight with Bruce Dern Long Hair was winning the fight until Wil used power and brawn as opposed to skill to beat him. Red River is another fine movie for the same types of reasons. Not an over the top movie like many became as he became a big star. Another favorite is Wings of Eagles especially the interactions between Wead and Shorty the Army Air Corp pilot who was supposedly based on Jimmy Doolittle. Lots of great fun between those two.

Thanks so much, gang!! I love these old westerns and now have plenty to put on the watchlist!!

So today I was off work and watched Big Jake with John Wayne. Overall a good movie, not my favorite and I found some of the supporting actors lackluster and somewhat annoying, but I'm glad I watched it!

Then later I watched High Noon with Gary Cooper:

What a story!! Incredible!! Great acting in this one and top dialogue. Not as action packed as some but really emotional and just... just great! As a younger man I didn't grow up with these pictures so I am really enjoying watching them. Thanks all, I'll be watching more soon!

I must be the only person in the world, who doesn't care for "Outlaw Josie Wales." I mean I've seen it. If I happen to see it's on, I'll watch bits and pieces. Heck, I've even got it on DVD, but it's just "OK" and not something I'll watch over and over. No idea why.

Quigley Down Under is one of my favorites. Tom Selleck, and Alan Rickman are great together. Toss in Laura San Giacomo and you add spice to the stew.

Stagecoach (all three versions of it I've seen), Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist, The Cowboys, Winchester 73, Ride the Far Country, All three installments of the Lonesome Dove Trilogy, and all 25 hours of "Centennial" another TV miniseries.
