Come on back up here to coastal North Carolina this fall and early winter, OldTexMex, and we'll put you on some "channel bass a.k.a. red drum" that would eat that one for breakfast along with the two others that were swimmin' with him!
Heck, the spots on the tail of one of ours would weigh more than that one!
That's a nice fish, though, if you're just fooling around with 'em while waiting for the big ones to come along....

What is your slot over there-that one looks to be a tad bit bigger than 24". Our slot limit is 27" can only keep one over that.Hope you fileted it quick

20-28 for reds,(x3) 15-25 for specks(x10)
We got a tag for one red over 28
I had lunch at Coco Marina in Cocodrie, Louisiana today. The Louisiana record Redfish, 61 lbs. and I believe Gulf states record at the time caught in 1998, was caught out of that marina and is mounted in the restaurant it's a huge fish.

I didn't know you guys had stiped marlin on the east coast. Thougnt you got the whites and we got the stripes? Mag bay is tough to beat.
Headed to Cortez Bank for blue fin, yellow fin, yellow tail and maybe a few dorado (dolphin) tomorrow.

You're right, I'm wrong! I'm tripping over my fishing story.
Mag bay gets nuts pre Bisbee/Halloween time. I agree it's hard if not impossible to beat for stripys. It ought to be happening right now. (I usually fish out of San Jose/ Puerto los cabos )

So, Is this something you can eat? Would you give up a bucket of Lake Michigan Yellow perch for one? Often hear about Red fish but don't hear about eating them.
Redfish are excellent! my favorites are Blackened, where the skinless filet is seasoned (Blackened Redfish seasoning, lots of it) then dipped in a bit of melted butter then dropped onto a VERY hot skillet or griddle it sputters, smokes, flames and turns dark brown fast, it is flipped and same for the other side, done in minutes but works best with a fillet not too thick, less than an inch I'd say otherwise the outside will be burned before the inside is cooked. Brush a bit of the butter over it as it is served.
Or another good way is on the "half shell" a larger fillet is left with the skin and scales on. It is well seasoned and a couple of lemon slices put on top set it over a medium fire in a BBQ pit, some hickory chips, will add good flavor, cook till the meat flakes with a fork. It is very good. Just slide a spatula between the skin and the meat and lift the fillet out of the "shell".
Large redfish can used in stews "Redfish Courtbuillion" very good too! but I don't usually keep any over 25 inches.
I have never eaten perch so can't judge them vs Redfish but the Reds are very good!

Not trying to one-up you, Steve; just to point out the truly world-class red drum fishing on our North Carolina coast.

Would take a lot of fire to blacken that baby!

Our slot here in Virginia Beach is 3@ 18"-26", perfect for table fare. Last weekend I cooked Blackened Redfish with a Mango Salsa. The salsa was labor intensive but worth it. I think the VA record is around 85 pounds but we generally release the large fish as they are usually breeding females. The spot(s) on the tail are curious. I caught one Red (we call them "puppy drum") with no spot at all. It looked like a Croaker on steroids! My daughter caught this fish with TWELVE spots on one side!
