I found the stocks quite a few years ago and they were old and dingy. At some point, someone added a high gloss shellac to them, which had started to flake off and dull.
I sent them out to be refinished and while they were gone, some research by a good friend brought me to this article. It is very likely that the stocks were made by David Wayland. They are made of a very dark hardwood (very hard to photograph) and the diamond is the nut for the screw, very indicative of his work.
They are installed on a 1969 Austin Behlert built PPC gun.
I still have yet to find pictures of Davids stocks from the early 60s with silver diamonds or silver animals to compare with. If anyone has any of his original stocks, please post pics.

Very nice grips by Mr. Wayland!

While I lived and worked in Lake County, California, from 1983 until I retired in 2005, I had heard about Mr. Wayland. I contacted him and had him make some grips for me. This was after he moved from southern California to Marin County, above San Francisco.

The first pair he made for me were for my brand new and recently introduced Model 645 that had just come out. They were made of smooth rosewood, and he installed S&W medallions for me that I had harvested from a pair of S&W checkered walnut magnas.

Later, Dave made a set of beautiful checkered double diamond walnut grips for my duty gun, a Beretta 92FS. His work was excellent and very fairly priced.

After I retired and moved to Texas in 2005, I eventually sold my 645 to a fellow S&W Forum member with those rosewood grips on it, but included the original black plastic panels along with the original box and papers.

Thanks for sharing those grips and the article about Dave. It brought back some great memories.

Edited to add a couple pictures of my 645...
