I have opportunity to acquire a 99% RM from a long time friend. No box, certificate, 6", black sights, original stocks. 3 digit reg #. What would be a fair/reasonable price?

There are many Registered Magnum experts on the Forum, but if the gun is as stated with all matching numbered parts (frame, cylinder, barrel, stocks) I would hazard a guess in the $4000-5000 range. Interested to see what the people with recent buying/selling experience report.

If its really a 6", and 99%, a fair price would be $7000 to $8000.
To the right bidder at a well-attended auction, it would probably be more.

What do you mean by "black" sights? Do you mean they are the same color as the rest of the gun? Like mike above said, if it is that barrell length and that condition it would be very valuable. Lots of variables that will determine value. The way you described it would be very desirable. I like the low registration number. What type grips, service or magna and to they number to the gun. Any refinish marks under the grips or elsewhere? RM prices are all over the charts. I find it hard to find one under 3K. If you do then you will most likely be getting one that is refinished or altered otherwise. I just bought one in a very common barrell lenght of 6 1/2 and it has been factory refinished. My grips are very nice magna's but do not number to the gun. If my gun had not been in that configuration I could not have afforded it. If you get a chance find out all you can about the one you are looking at. Pictures would answer a lot of questions. Good luck, it sounds like a nice one.

reg mag - questions

sights same color as pistol as best I could tell. Magna grips. no evidence/re-finish marks. It is possible it was a 6.5" barrel not 6. I appreciate all input so far.

Could be 10k then start deducting for condition, refinish, improper grips,no box ect. Very important that it is in the configuration it left the factory. Hey the sky is the limit if everything checks out and you want it badly enough;-)
Post a picture, PLEASE.

2alphas,

Mike has a lot of experience in these things and I think he is pretty close on one as you describe. Usually, with guns which were produced with both 6" and 6.5" barrels there isn't much difference in the pricing. But in the case of the RM's the 6.5" was the most common with more than 1500 of the total production having that barrel length. On the other hand, the 6" barreled guns number less than 850. So in RM's of equal condition, there is usually a premium for the rarer lengths.

Regarding the selling price of the gun I would encourage that you have the owner tell you what he will sell it for. You can then either buy it if you feel that it is a fair price or you can try to negotiate and convince them otherwise. I have found that it is rarely (read that as "never") good business to initially price someone's gun for them. That goes in spades if the seller is your friend.

It sounds like an excellent gun and I hope you are able to acquire it. If so, we welcome you to the "fraternity".

Magna grips should be numbered to the gun. If I recall correctly, magna's began to be presented on the RMs in the fall of 1935. Number 282 was made in August of 1935 and letters with the service grips and grip adapter, both of which have disappeared into history.

I wish you success in your purchase quest. They are great guns and a joy to own.

Thank you,

My thanks to all who have posted replys and offered wisdom and thoughts.

RM's are very beautiful ... and Addictive

I have had the good fortune of coming across several RM's this past year with conditions ranging from "shooter" grade to "very collectible" grade and for the most part, prices corresponded with the condition and configuration of the gun. Does the one you are interested in look something like this 6"?

Also, I was not sure if it had a certificate or if the "no" in front of "box" related to the certificate as well?

I acquired the above gun in 2009 and I would have a tough time parting with it at any price.

If your friend has lots of money, I would pay less than if your friend needed the money to fund groceries and make the mortgage payment...

As a point of reference, there are several RM's listed on GB (one from GW with many goodies in used condition - been there for a while with no takers).

rm question

To clarify, none of the following: box, cert, grip adapter....nothing but the 99% condition (all original) pistol.
It does however wear a 5" barrel now that I have looked more closely and the initial excitement has worn off. I am still on the bubble but only have until the morning to make a final answer.

You haven't said what your friend is asking for it.
If reasonable and you can swing it without a second mortgage, I would go for it.

Hi again, looks as though my value guess was a little low...

FYI, there were 869 of the 5224 RMs made with the 5" barrel. 839 were made with the 6", so their production numbers were comparable. Depending on the price, must be a tough decision. Please let us know how the deals turns out?

Good Luck

A 99% all original 5" RM, even with none of the goodies still sounds very nice. Buying from friends is always tough as you don't want to take advantage of them, and you want to keep your friendship, but you don't want to overpay.

If my friend owned a RM in the condition that you described and was willing to part with it, I am pretty sure that as friends we would be able to come to an agreement on price and that by early tomorrow morning, I would have a new to me 99% RM in my safe,:) where it would most likely stay for the rest of my mortal existence.

Good luck in your decision. Regardless of what you do, we would love to see some photos. If you decide to pass, there are those of us here that would love to talk with your friend.
