Registered Magnum box - RM Boxes

I don't have much to add but thought I would throw my picture up of my reg mag with box. The box is tattered but I am happy with it and the gun.

I know you serious collectors are a different breed but I sure don't understand that kind of money for cardboard.
I like the vintage guns but cardboard just doesn't do it for me.
So honestly, how many of you would pay this kind of money if you knew the addition of the box would not increase the value of your gun ? That you were buying the box just for your own enjoyment ?

A LGS has dozens of vintage S&W boxes in his back room he said I could have. At least 100 as far as Ican see.

And then our poster at that time, Manny, found the box for his RM. He had everything except that box. And the low life scoundrel who had sold him the gun demanded $3000 for the musty old piece of cardboard. So he paid up then yelled about it for a long time afterward. Sure, it cost him too much, but I think I remember him selling the package later for about $15,000.00.

That's pretty close Dick. But the scoundrel sold me the box for 4K and I sold the package for 20k.

For some reason the fact that I can't get people to understand then and now is that I wasn't as upset about the price as I was the fact that I bought a second pair of matching grips that he kept to maximize his profit. He knew I wouldn't return the box so he cheated me out of the grips. It's water under the bridge now and the word is out on those scoundrels. I'm clawing my way back again. :)

.... It's water under the bridge now and the word is out on those scoundrels....

It's just a damn shame that someone had to get bit by that dog, and I'm sorry it was you. It's also a shame that that's what usually has to happen to expose unethical sellers. At least now we know how he rolls....

I have a 1917 Commercial box that is absolutley Mint. I think it is more rare than a RM box. I've had it at two Annuals and had only one person ask me a price on it. Maybe people didn't realize what I have. Before anyone asks, no I didn't get it out of a dumpster at Smith & Wesson. I saved it before it went in the dumpster!

Don, I have a 1917 Commercial box that is grease pencil numbered to the revolver it holds, S210364, which is a stunning ANIB example of the 1917. I also have the receipt from Warshal's Sporting Goods, First and Madison, Seattle 4, Washington, dated 02/28/1950. The 1917 cost $64.00, a box of ammo $4.10, and a holster for $4.15. With sales tax of $2.17, the purchase totaled $74.42.

What say you as to a ballpark price for the aforementioned package?

Best regards,

Jim

First off let me say this. How many mint in the original box Commercial 1917's have we as a group seen? How many mint in the original box Registered Magnums have we seen? Okay, there's your answer. Based on your reply, I'm saying your package would start at $6000.00 to $7000.00.
If I were to sell my box, I'd put a price on it of $3500.00.

It's a nice box, not rare, but with the two stamps it makes it desirable.
I would think it would bring $500.00 and up.

Thanks Don but I will have to disagree that a 5" M&P Target with Humpback Hammer (or 5" Target with regular hammer) is not rare. There would certainly be less of these produced than RM's and therefore less boxes. I have no idea what the box would bring, but there is no doubt in my mind that its not on the scale, price-wise, of an RM box.

Kris: Do you have the gun that goes with that box? I would love to see it, as I have never seen a pre-war 5" K-38 Target. Now Mike Priwer probably has two or three pairs of them...;)

Here's the closest I have. It's for a 6" Target...

... a K-32 Target with a HBH that is...

Now, if only I had the gun that goes with the box...

I agree, but you have to take into consideration the ratio of these against RM's. These are scarce, but I still think my estimate is correct.

I never said anything about your price estimate. I actually think $500 may be a tad optimistic.

I know that. Let me explain a little better. The box alone is any where from $250.00 to $300.00. The three other things that boost the price is 1) 5". While not really rare, it is an uncommon barrel length. 2) Humpback Hammer, not many boxes have that stamp. 3) Target. Not many 5" targets out there. Of course this is just my opinion. I'm not offended if anyone disagrees. the trick is, try to get someone to pay the price.

Not many 5" targets out there.

I've seen a bunch of 6" guns and very few 4" Targets, but I cannot for the life of me remember ever seeing a 5" Target M&P. I usually pay attention to the pre-war target guns pretty closely and I don't recall one in photos and certainly not in person. I'd love to be educated a bit on this...please?:)

Believe me, I do understand the attraction of a vintage gun with its original box. What I don't understand is paying huge money for a box you know is not original to a gun, then putting said gun into it, and expecting the price of a gun with its original box. I also don't understand paying a premium for a gun with a box that is clearly not original just to have a box.
