I would like to learn more. I had been under the impression that these revolvers did not ship with registration numbers — that the buyer had to send documentation back to S&W to be issued a Registration number?

There were 3 box sizes and two different picture types. The variations are explained pretty well in the SCSW. Your REG 155 would have been shipped in the 1st type large blue picture box showing the Registered Magnum with service style grips and with the Wesson Grip Adapter attached.

As moosedog explained, .357 Magnums manufactured during the registration era were stamped with the registration number.

However they were not shipped with a registration certificate, rather a card as pictured below was included in the box with the revolver. As you can see the card was pre-annotated with the same registration number that was stamped on the gun…..

The card advised the owner that if they returned the card with their name and address that they would receive the registration certificate for their .357 Magnum…..

The factory used mailing tubes as pictured below to mail the registration certificates to the owner…..

Here is one of my more favorite photos of my most complete set.

It is only missing the Certificate Mailing Tube and of course the Registration Mailer "Card" (as the card was sent back and the certificate issued), both of which are nicely shown in Terry's post above.

That's very COOL, Richard! I like how an owner wrote "Extra Rear Sight, Don't Loose" on the small envelope. That's smart because it's stuff like that that gets separated from the total package because an heir doesn't know what it is, if it isn't labeled.
