Remarkable Leaves

I was out raking leaves and was struck by how beautiful they were. These are off a London Plane tree I have had for many years and were never like this. I am not a Botanist but suspect the coloration is due to an early freeze we had followed by warm weather? Me neighbor came over and asked if she could collect some for a Thanksgiving decoration and I said sure with the only caveat being that you take one you take them all, no joy. Enjoy.

Ours were just stunning. Then we had a very hard freeze, followed by very high winds and heavy rain. Most all down now.

I agree, not sure why the leaves were spectacular here in Michigan but the Maples were fluorescent with some of the sugar maples getting that red/orange/pink color that simply glows. Birches and Hickories were bright yellow, with the oaks and their deep red mahogany tint. Quite a show.

Some beautiful leaves here, too. I assume that weather and soil conditions account for year to year differences, but I certainly have no expertise in such matters.

Yep, our Sugar Maples were awesome this Fall too.

Fall Colors in North Texas

Although the DFW area of Texas is heavily treed, we don't often get spectacular Fall foliage. This year is different. This aerial shot is from our local newspaper.

Mrs. Native and I were between Helen GA and Highlands NC a month ago and saw little or no color until we got over 4,000 feet.

Fall colors are beautiful here in Michigan, especially when they're not in my yard!

We have a Bradford Pear tree (decorative, no fruit). They were all the rage 25 years ago, but have fallen out of favor. The branches are prone to breaking as they age and they usually don't drop their leaves until January, which leaves a mess to clean up in early spring. In late spring, the tree develops lovely white blossoms. Unfortunately, the blossoms smell like baby barf and litters the ground with little white petals that are impossible to rake up. It's not uncommon for neighbors or visitors to ask, What's that smell?

This year, thankfully, the leaves are already down. The Mrs. and I raked they up last weekend, bagged them and the trash man hauled them away this morning. The bare pear tree sure looks lovely to me!

In my area we have the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. Great scenic roads for bikers to get some wind therapy. This year the foliage was as beautiful as I can remember. We were even blessed with abundance of wildlife. Almost 600 miles of scenic by-way with a speed limit of 35 to 45 Mph. Plus you get Mt Mitchell and Mt Rogers thrown in for free.

Love the Sandhill Cranes! I have seen several large flocks migrating the past couple of days. They are fun to watch and hear but do portend the coming winter so a mixed blessing.
