I ordered a box from Midway to try in my new to me 640-1.From what I've read on this forum this is a good self-defence load and correct me if I'm wrong ,it's not a full house load either.

Yep, I'd say a mid level load, recoil is pretty manageable in my 649. I generally run the dreaded 125 Federals but I wouldn't volunteer to play catch with a Golden Sabre!

Think of it as a .38+P+ loaded in .357 brass. Same goes for Speer SB .357. IIRC, Winchester Silvertips are a little hotter, but not quite loaded to max either.

Yes, I agree with 'elcrusir'. The Golden Sabre is very manageable in my 649 and pretty much like a .38 special +p in my model 28. I will not hesitate to buy more.

ST's are a light[er] load?!?!

I'd hate to come across a real max power load then, a full round was more than enough for me through a M60...:o

I got a box of GD SB but haven't tried them out yet in the 60, not bad at all in a 686.

Wait for others to weigh in. My recollection is that Silvertips are a 7/8 of the way load (close, but not quite full power).

125 Grain Golden Sabres

I carry this as a duty load in my custom 3" Model 66. Very little flash and super accurate in my gun. Not as "rip snortin" as the Federal 125 grainers.

I like Golden Saber .357 Magnum ammo but my M640 seems to like Winchester 145gr Silvertip ammo best. It's very accurate in that revolver. Of course your M640 may be different.

I like the Golden Sabers in K-frame .357s. They are only slightly flashier than Speer Short Barrel .357, and have almost identical ballistics from 3" barrels and up. In shorter barrels, the Speer load is a little better than the GS, but not much. I'll try not to stand in front of either.

Some have mentioned the Federal 125gr. load. Several years ago, I chronoed some of it through my 2 1/4" SP-101. Despite the tremendous fireball, it only got about 1235 fps., while Cor-Bon's 125gr. load ran at almost 1450 fps., with very little flash. I don't know about current production, but back then (about 12-15 years ago) the Federal full-power load, in snubbies, wasn't.

357 golden saber is hotter than any 38+p I've come across. Runs 1220 fps or so at muzzle out of a 4" barrel. Silver tips recoil pretty stiff with the 145 gr bullet, and they still kick up about 1290 fps at muzzle out of a 4". As far as the full power 125's (federal, remington, and so on) getting 1235 fps out of a 2.25" barrel is smoking. That's better ballistics than 124 gr 9mm +p out of a 4" barrel that half the cops in the country are walking around with as a duty load. Nothing to sneeze at.
