Remington 1911 R1

Anyone have a Remington R1? If so do you like it? How is the finish? How does it compare to the Colt Series 70?

I got one when they first came out. Have had no issues with it. The finish is good for a $600 .45. I've heard some say point of aim is off but I have not noticed that
I don't have a comparison to the Colt.

I have an early model 1911 R1.
100% reliable from day 1, and has a great trigger, too.
As it's a series 80 system, hard to compare apples to apples with a Colt series 70.
Fit and finish are on a par with my Colts.

Remington r-1

My wife has one. The first time at the range it was shooting about 2" low at 10 yrds. Called Remington and they sent a shorter sight that arrived two days later. Changed it out and it now hits dead center.

I've had one for about 4 years now. I think it's the best buy 45 for under $1000. Mine shoots to point of aim,. fit and finish are good. and the sights are better than the standard colt sight on my series 70

Would rather a Series 70. I have owned one Series 80 and shot a few others. The firing pin safety in them makes the trigger feel mushy to me. I have heard that with some work a Series 80 trigger can rival a Series 70, but why bother.

I've had my R1 for six years, very pleased with it. Nice finish, good sights, accurate, and reliable. No complaints, which is more than can be said about many of the Colts I have owned. I had a Series 70 Colt for several years, also a nice gun, but when I had to pick one to keep I held onto the R1 and let the Colt go. I was getting better accuracy from the R1. A friend of mine likes the R1's so much he bought three of them in various configurations.

Only made two alterations to the R1 since I bought it. I replaced the factory grips with Ahrends Maccasar Ebony, and I installed a arched mainspring housing (Smith & Alexander). Everything else remains stock.

The series 70 has a crisper trigger and is easier to reassemble,though I do keep a series 80 around too.

I bought a 1911R1 when they first came out. Totally dependable, accurate and has the best out-of-the-box trigger I've ever seen on a production 1911.
The finish is good, but its a plain, matte black. Don't expect a high polish blue.
I consider it one of the best values in 1911s today.

I have an 1911 R1 S (stainless) and believe it is a great value. Fit and finish is excellent and reliability is on par with any other quality 1911's.
Some may complain about the factory mags, but I have never had a problem with them. I also use Wilson Combat magazines with it as well.
Since it is a range gun. I typically use 230 grain FMJ ball or lead ball reloads, but I have run a variety of hollow points, however, I never tried any semi wadcutters. With that said, never had a malfunction of any type. If I had to CCW this R1 S with ball or HP, I would without any hesitation.

I wondered if they made it in stainless. Good!


But do you run HP ammo in yours? Semiwadcutter bullets? I've had good luck with those in Colts, but many don't. My Colts range from a Lend Lease one to a Gold Cup. I don't tell how well the last shot with Federal's 230 grain Match ammo. No one would believe that I could shoot that well!


Many Colts in the 1980's and beyond had the rear sight canted. Disgraceful on an expensive gun!

Springfield Milspec looks cool too and they are now made in the USA.

You can't go wrong with a Springfield. Excellent pistols and the best customer service in the business.
I have four Springers and they're great.

I have three R-1's, an original offering, an Enhanced "Commander" and an Enhanced full size stainless. All three are reliable and accurate. With the Enhanced versions well configured and a great buy for the buck. Don't go by the MSRP prices as the LGS prices here and there are really good.

Everybody has their own opinion but comparing my SR1911 I paid $700 for and my buddies R1 that he paid around $650 I would gladly pay the extra $50 for the SR. His R1 has the worst trigger I have felt on a 1911 and the POI is way off. The balance of the gun just seems off. Maybe its just his gun or my SR was made on a good day of the week. Even my dad says the SR trigger is better than on his SIG XO. Again, just my opinion on 1911s under 1k.

I love mine. Its all stock except for an arched mainspring housing. 100 percent reliable with ball and hollowpoints.

The factory mags are Mec-Gar as best I can determine and, as you, I've never had an issue. I've bought more Mec-Gar mags to use as well!
