Remington 38+p, fail to fires?

Took my new to me M&P340 out to shoot some clay pigeons (sitting against a berm, not launched) a couple of weeks ago and out of a box of 50 had 4 that would not fire regardless of the number of times they were tried. Since the gun had a lightened mainspring I figured that was the culprit so I ordered a spring pack from Wolff. Rather than play around I installed the 9lb heavy spring and re-tried the 4 failures. Three fired right off but the fourth would not fire. An examination of the primer shows a really hard hit. Hard enough that I was surprised it didn't punch right through. I just don't believe it's from a light strike. Has anyone had any problems with the green box remington. I don't have another gun to try it in but like I said it's a very heavy strike dead center.

I haven't had any problems with Remington ammo but anything is possible. You probably get a few bad rounds. You never know how long that ammo sat on the shelf and what the conditions were. I would write to Remington and tell them about it. They will probably want to know the lot number from the box and they just might send you a box of ammo for your troubles...

I had the same problem with Remington 158 Gr LSWCs in my 642,

Thought it might be my gun but the same day I discovered the Remington ammo wouldn't work, I shot about 100 reloads using Remington SP primers.

Plus I had a few rounds of Speer Lawman and Wincherster HPs that fired just fine.

I don't buy much factory ammo but when I do, I want them to work.

Finely found some Winchester LSWCs and I'm waiting for them.

This is my carry gun, I might just say "screw it" and stick to reloads for carry.

Lots of bullets out there but I want LSWCs.

I bought some of that lead ammo in HP form. It better fire if I need it to. Thanks for the heads up.

Federal has also released some UNCRIMPED ammo like that, their No. 38G load. Don't know if it was a mistake or planned not to crimp it. Lots that I've bought in the past had the normal crimp and shot well.

One reason why I don't like buying ammo by mail is that the dealer may lie about the crimp and ship it, anyway. Heck, many of their employees may not know what a crimp is!

Remington Ammunition is the ONLY center fire ammo I have ever had issues with!. I stopped using it in 1984 when I was experiencing too many FTF out of multiple guns that fired everything and anything. I sent the failed bullets to Remington and I got a sorry excuse of an apology letter and a rebate voucher for a new box. A few weeks later I had the same thing happen, and that was the last time I ever bought Remington ammo! That time I just pulled the bullets and used the cases for reloading.

Their Rimfire ammo is pathetic to say the least. At our Range there is a collection box of .22 Rimfire's that FTF and more than 90% are Remington Thunderbolts.

I reload for the most part, but when I do buy Factory ammo it's either Buffalo Bore, Winchester or Federal. CCI ammo is good too, just expensive around here.

Just curious, has anyone ever pulled one of these cartridges apart and examined the primers from the inside? I'd be tempted to pull a FTF and a couple of others to compare.

Couple of observations if I may........

First, running light springs in a defensive piece isn't a great idea.

Second, having one fail to fire totally after a light strike isn't unusual; the primer pellet is fractured.

Third, buying ammo from third-party resellers like ATG. You never know if it was an overrun, a department that changed loads and flogged out what they had on hand, or an ooopsie that found its way into the system and a wholesaler or end-user is trying to recoup their investment.

I've seen duds with all makes.

Same here...I stopped using or buying for my old agency any ammo made by Remington about that same time due to multiple misfires, terrible QC on shotshells and erratic performance (wide velocity swings) with pistol rounds in both .38Spl and .357Mag. IIRC the FBI also had issues with QC on issued 230gr Gold Sabre JHPs in approved Sig 220's about the same time.

I still won't buy their stuff, although they may have improved somewhat.

Velocity averages a modist 732 out of my 642, mild yet you get penitration.

It matches my reloads with 4.5 grns of Unique so I don't have to burn up money practicing with factory stuff.

50 rounds per box, counting shipping its still cheaper then Buffalo Bore which had 20 rounds per box.
