I've been toying with the idea of a adding a multi game hunting rifle to my very small collection. I originally was thinking about an AR-10, but then I stumbled across the Remington 700 .308 Magpul.
This thing sort of brakes from the traditional appearance of most bolt action hunting rifles. It has presence and offers a threaded barrel like the AR-10 would offer.
I've always heard good things about the Remington 700s and wondered if any other members had experience with or pictures of this particular Remington 700 model?

So let's share some knowledge, stories, and photos!

I've two rem 700's in 308. One is a rem Sendero with a varmint weight barrel. Comes with one of the synthetic stocks. Says 308 right on the bbl. try as I might I cannot get a good cheek weld with this stock. Last resort is to buy a lace on cheek pad or riser. Second rifle is a single shot rem, 40x rifle with a heavy match stainless bbl in 7.62 Nato stamped on the barrel. This rifle has a laminated thumbhole stock. This one has sorely tempted me to do violence on the cheek piece of the rifle. I literally have to cram my cheek hard down on the comb of the rifle. Seriously been thinking of wood removal with a hand held plane them some sanding and refinishing. And a little OT here. I have a H&R model 12 22rf target rifle that came with the Redfield Palma sights and is drilled and tapped for target scopes both with internal and external scope adjustments. problem if you use the iron sights pray you have skinny cheek bones cause I have a heck of a time getting my fat face down low enough to use the iron sights. And this problem regarding getting a good cheek weld isn't limited to the above rifles. My old 77 Ruger must have been designed for iron sights same as my #1 in 45/70. Literally have to climb up on the cheek piece to get a decent sight picture. And don't depend on the extension rings cause they will only get you 5/8" rearward movement. I've had three different sight systems on the #1. In desparation I'm gonna swap out the 3.5x14 Leupold scope and go with an old lyman 10x with AO as a last resort. Even since the manufacurers came out wit the compact rifles and compact scopes they seem to think its hunky dory. It ain't. Sorry for the rant. Frank

Remington 700 308's have been lacking their old accuracy lately! I have been very impressed with Ruger and Savage chassis rifles in 308! My now discontinued 10 BAS shot the first box of ammo (after sighting the scope) in to a single hoe right out of the box! The current version is about $400 less! With quality ammo my friends with Ruger Precision Rifles in 6.5 Creedmoor, are able to keep up with me on the shots longer than 700 yards!

If The chassis rifle look is what you want, look around! If the synthetic stocked, threaded barrel, sporting rifle is your cup of tea, Ruger and Savage are setting the standard for a lot less money in those guns too!

The 700 action is a superior designed action, but getting Remington to put one together right is a problem these days!

Hope you have gun stores nearby you that can chow you all the versions, so you can see side by side for yourself.

Rem 308

I have 2 Remingtons in 308; both heavy bbls. I also bought the 700 Magpul edition in 6.5 CM. Really like the Creedmoor so much that I restocked one of the 308 with a Magpul stock. I find the stock much more comfortable due to the adjustments available. I agree with one responder that getting a good cheek weld with the stock stock is nearly impossible. Both Magpul stocks shoot sub 1 moa. Sorry I’m away from home so pics aren’t possible. Btw both have the Magpul triggerguard came with the 6.5 and added it to the 308. Mags fit both

All of the 700 308's I have had (several) were honest 3/4" or better guns so the accuracy is there. However, if I was going to do a factory chasis gun (VERY slim chance) I would probably go with the Ruger RPR now that they've been out long enough to work out the bugs.

At the ~$800 street price, I think it's badly-placed.

You can buy a budget 700 and a real-deal chassis for about the same price. Another $200 or so will also buy you a lot of other incredibly nice rifles. I'm considering a Savage 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor--$950-$1050.

Hell, you can buy a brand-new 700 AAC-SD, pick up a Magpul Hunter stock, throw the factory Hogue stock in the trash, and just about break even with what they want for the 700 Magpul.

I don't think it's a bad gun, I just think it's placed very poorly in the market. You yourself would probably be better-served by a less-expensive .308 with a lighter barrel for hunting (there are too many to start listing them, the SKUs are thick on the ground). Save your dollars to build a big heavy chassis rifle later.
