Got a call from Remington today saying The replacement R51 models are ready to go out,, but I think I am going to hold on to my original and not participate in the recall, maybe it will be a collectible some day!

A dangerous nuisance is never a collectible in the firearms world. The collectible firearm must, above all else, work as designed and do so safely.

Get it replaced.

The replacement will be collectible when the R51 is ultimately discontinued as it will be within a couple of years.

I was all hot and bothered about getting a R51 when they were first announced and was just about to lay out the cash when the questionable reports starting coming out. With cash in hand I held out as the reports became more and more negative. Finally, with the recall I lost interest and instead plopped the money down for a Ruger LC9s Pro and could not be more pleased.

Far as I'm concerned, the R51 missed it's window of opportunity.

The R51 is nothing but a disgrace to the memory of the original Remington Model 51, which was a really neat, compact, and well-made pocket pistol. The Model 51 is often considered to be the best design of all the American-made pocket pistols popular prior to WWII. I still have two of them.

Yikes, get rid of that time bomb and get the replacement. As Shawn said, it will be collectible too because Remington will probably wind up discontinuing the R51 because few will want to risk being burned again. Might as well get something that won't put your eye out in the meantime.

It's really tough to recover from a colossal blunder like the R51. Even though the "new and improved" version may well have resolved all of the early problems, the damage to its reputation has already been done. One would have thought that Remington would have performed a great deal more field testing before allowing the first R51 to be sold to the public.

If I had one of the early R51s, no question that I would swap it in an instant for the new edition.
