Removal of hammer spur on 4506?

The hammer spur on my 4506 digs into my side when seated. I see that the 6906 gets along without one rather well - so I'm wondering if I could have a smith zing that off for me and smooth it out, or will the lighter hammer no longer be reliable for primer strikes?

And if it'd be okay, where's the best place to get a spare, so I don't cut a non-MIM piece? :D

Don't cut anything. Just swap out the existing spurred hammer for a spurless version.
You can often find spurless forged hammers on some of the auction sites. I'd be looking for a flash chrome forged spurless from a 6906/4516. You will also need to change the hammer stirrup. Your 4506 has a fullsize stirrup pinned to the hammer. Most every spurless hammer I see has a compact (short) stirrup. Those will merely need to be swapped.

Cheers
Bill

Ah - having the same hammers would make sense from a manufacturing point of view, I'd agree. :o

Thanks!

Please post a picture or two. I image it would be similar looking to a 4546, but at the same time rather distinctive.

My 4506-1 wears a spurless 6906 hammer I installed several years ago. As stated above, if the 6906 hammer you acquire has the original short strut, you'll need to switch it for the longer one of the original 4506 hammer.

Works great.

Well, weather permitting the 6906 hammer should be here Friday. Time to dust off those ol' armorer skills and look one more time at the awesome videos BMCM pointed out....

Fingers crossed ... and will take pictures, B&A.

The start:

The frame:

Then after sweat, cussin', lots of re-watching the videos ... MAGIC happens:

No, I'm not going to show you the bits and pieces spread out, nor the audio of my Harsh Adult Language. In fairness, the video BMCM pointed me to helped a lot - though the guy COULD have been a little clearer in showing how some of the fiddly bits went back in.

The reassembled Smith:

It passes the "launch a pencil" test, and hand-cycles without issue. It'll be a couple days before I can get it to the range, though.:)

Looks Good. Now all you need is a flash chromed trigger to match that hammer. ;)

Cheers

My FDE kydex mag pouches do not "match" the black kydex holster it rides in, and neither of them "match" the dark brown Beltman Belt that holds the whole kit around my waist. And yet they work. Much as the stock trigger will "work" with the hammer. :p

Now, though, I'm going to wonder if that beavertail is going to dig in instead of the hammer digging in....:o
