Hello All. Just got my M&P 15-22 MOE and I i am very pleased. Took it to the range with my 7 year old son and had a blast. The rifle is VERY quite, especially next to the 556 & 308 black guns that were up there. I could barely hear it fire. The first few rounds I fired, I actually thought it didn't fire because I couldn't hear/feel a thing. A couple of guys asked if it was "silenced" 5.56 AR until they got up close to see it was just a .22 rifle. haha.

So, I got to thinking, if I put a barrel shroud on it, it would really seem like it was a silenced rifle. So I hope some of you could help me with some questions...

1. I am in CA. Can I legally thread a shroud on?
2. How do I take the compensator off?
3. How do I legally mount a shroud on? Must it be permanent?

Thanks!!!

Not exactly an expert on it so don't take this as fact... A barrel shroud is really nothing more than cosmetic right? I didn't think the CA model came with "flash hider" but if it did I wouldn't think you'd have anything to worry about? Probably wouldn't matter with a barrel shroud even if it wasn't?

About removing, if you don't have a barrel lock for vice, I've read that placing the barrel between two blocks of wood will work. Main thing I think is too avoid torquing stress on receiver and scratching the barrel. I think a search could answer that part of your question. Good luck and let us know what works well

I actually removed mine yesterday (excited for belt Feds shroud) all I did was warm up put a little pb blaster on it and got a peace of 2x4 and drilled a hole in it then cut it in half length wise then put in a vice to hold it tight came off pretty easy

Hello,
Maybe I can help , I also live in CA. – I in no way claim to know the answers to CA. insane long list of gun laws but let me give you what I know and send you to the right place.
First off I also have the MOE with the flash, some rules apply to centerfire that do not apply to rim fire, not saying that that is the case here just making that statement.
You can have a fake silencer – I suggest you buy one that is clearly stamped FAKE SOUND SUPPRESSER or it may get taken from you for sound testing. You do not want the hassle.
Also I refer you to Calguns.net - Powered by vBulletin
There is all the CA. gun info you need over there.

Ninja,
I also live in CA. It is not illegal to own/use a FAKE suppressor here. It is also not illegal to own/use a shroud here. That said, a suppressor and a shroud are two different things. A suppressor, fake or real, USUALLY goes on the front of the barrel, and extends out; increasing the length of the barrel. A shroud USUALLY slides over the barrel, and increases the width of the barrel, without lengthening the barrel. Whichever you decide on, post pics for all to see :D

New Guy & Ninja
I believe if the thing at the end of the barrel is non-operational
(Fake Silencer) Ect.
It is considered a barrel extension.
There is a guy on Cal Guns (the link I posted), that does nothing but test confiscated guns for decibel readings and other possible violations to make sure that they do not function, he is the one that suggested that whatever you put on the end of your barrel make sure it its stamped fake from the manufacture. He stated that hoping the officer may not confiscate it in the first place.
ONE of the problems with Kalifornia gun laws is that they are so complex, ambiguous and just plain do not make since that most of the Law Enforcement officers just are not that familiar with them and will confiscate and make arrests to error on the side of caution.
Again, go to CalGuns forum there is a wealth of information and guys who are really up on Ca. gun law.

Not gonna touch the legalities.
the new guy is correct. A shroud USUALLY slides over the barrel, and increases the diameter of the barrel, without lengthening the barrel.
A long shroud that goes into the hand guard will just look beefier. The muzzle is within an 1/8 inch of the face of the shroud and the sound will not be affected.
You can even have both the shroud and flash hider on if you want.

Ninja, If you do decide to get a barrel "add-on" there is a great member that belongs both here and calguns that you should check out. His name is BELT_FED and makes all sorts of goodies, including very nice shrouds. Might be just what your looking for.

Ninja,
If you remove your compensator to put on a shroud and you are in socal (preferably orange county) I would gladly give you a few bucks for your compensator... just saying... PM me if interested.

I like when I happen to shoot at the same time as bigger caliber pistol shooters or other rifles haha. Cool effect
