Removing Surface Rust.

I'm picking up an early 70's model 28 next week. I has a couple of spots on the right side of the frame that has surface rust.

Any way to remove the rust without dulling / marring the finish. Thanks in advance for any information!

Breakfree Clp and a toothbrush. It will stop the rust cold.
The pot marks will always be seen, but at least it won't be brown looking.

The best way I personally know, I learned here. Put a good oily penetrant, such as Kroil [a brand of thin oil/penetrant],on the rust and let it soak a day or so. Then use 0000 steel wool gently, lubricated well by the Kroil or transmission fluid, etc.

I have unintentionally removed blueing in this process, so try to be gentle and turn the 0000 steel wool frequently so as to avoid the rust as an abrasive.

i have found using liberal amounts of break free to saturate the part and then stainless steel wool, yes like a pot scrubbed, this takes the rust off and leaves the blueing. brought back several rifles with this method. rub the part that needs cleaning with the break free let it sit for about 15 minutes to loosen the rust then scrub with the stainless steel wool. wipe off with rug and repeat this has given the bst results for me. did a remington sportsmans model shotgun, marlin 35 lever action, sks ..... ope this helps doeboy

Don't know as I would use any kind of steel abrasive. You can find copper pads that will not attack the bluing.

i didn't think it would work either but it worked wonders on mine. the pot scrubbers are more of a ribbon thinkness as oposed to a fine strand. i have used steel wool 0000 to take blueing off. try it you'll be please with the results.

If Breakfree CLP won't work, try a bit of Flitz. Use very sparingly and DON'T over-do it.

I have found penetrating oil and a copper or brass bristle brush works well at removing surface rust without harming the blueing.

Corrosion X and bronze wool will not harm the bluing. But use a "light hand", you can wear bluing off with a paper towel if you rub hard enough.
