Rental car test report: Kia Soul. Longish

Due to the Kia Soul's very effective marketing campaign, whenever I see one, I can only visualize

Star, I agree. I'm a native Texan happily living in Ohio. Considering the number of heavy hitters, hunting and financial, in the Dallas Safari Club, anything they say I would pay close attention to.

A Gar is a large, slow swimming fish, common in East Texas, and a relative of the sturgeon!:D

Bill--

That's actually pretty good. :D

But the Gaur is an Asiatic bison, pronounced as "gower." One of the largest wild cattle. The ironic thing is, most Americans who see it in print pronounce it like the "gar" fish.
Which really is pronounced as gar.

Did somebody mention Corollas? The best engineered, most-produced vehicle on the planet?

Geez, where's that 'annoyed at thread drift' thread when I need it?

Back to the OP; I'd think about buying a KIA Soul except'n that I do'n wanner support that Kim Jong feller. I still haven't forgotten about Pork Chop hill, Tet, Khe Sanh and the Chosin Reservoir. (Did I mention I'm from TeeeeXus? Gotta hold up the stereotype!)

They must be doing something right. I see those Kia Soul's all over town. The old couple across the street just traded in a white one and got a new silver one. Repeat customers are usually a good sign.

Kia cars are made in many places, but none come from North Korea, so none of your money would go to Mr Kim.

I had to wiki this, Star. I had heard of Indian wild cattle, but had no idea they were so fearsome. I was educated about how to pronounce it as well.

I am glad you knew I was kidding and appreciated the attempt at humor! Bill S

and i believe Tet & Khe Sanh were fought in a more recent Asian conflict
having little to do Geographical-wise with Korea :)

Steve, how does any ordinary automobile manage to impress you after zipping around in your Jag when you are at home? :)

Hey I just solved the problem of pronunciation difference between Brits and Yankees, Jag!!!

I drove "ordinary" cars for years, so I guess there is a "back to my roots" factor involved. Besides, we all love a plucky underdog.

Another thing is that I am fascinated by engineering and design. This goes for cars, guns, cameras, aircraft, you name it. It fascinates me that in this technological era that the perfect product rarely ever emerges. So often just after you exclaim "this is great" you come across the "what were they thinking" feature when looking at something.

Good example from the digital camera world. Panasonic came out with a line of cameras called the Lumix series. They all had top line optics and optical image stabilization. The sensors they used were not as low noise as some, but that can often be fixed (to a degree) by post processing providing the original image is not over processed. Like many small cameras the series does not offer a RAW format.

To compound the felony, Panasonic decided to equip the processor with a "constant filesize" JPEG algorithm. As a result, busy or noisy pictures suffer too much JPEG compression with smearing and artifacts. By comparison, Olympus let the files grow to whatever you need to preserve fidelity. Just maddening.

You gripe about 30-31 mpg ? My Nissan Xterra gets 13.5 to 14 around town and 18-19 on the highway .

they look interesting. just need another 200 horsepower and they might be ok.

BTW thanx for the review

Mrs Jeffsmith has her eyes on the Soul
as a possible next vehicle

You're welcome.

Just tell her that the 2.0 is well worth the extra money over the base 1.6. Don't go mad on options like the huge and heavy glass sunroof and she will have a good car.

This thing is very quiet, the gearbox is butter smooth and it gathered speed deceptively quickly given the small displacement.

Passing manoeuvres on two-lane roads above 4000' required much forward planning and a willingness to let the motor rev out.

I think the secret is the cleverly rounded bonnet and the tumblehome sloped sides.

My only real gripe is petrol mileage.

kilometers?

Also, do the Brits still use horsepower to rate engines? So backwards...

What's a tyre???

I think down your way it's pronounced Taar.

I had a one day rental one of these cars when I was in Austin in early June. Originally I reserved a Corolla, but they didn't have any when I got there. They offered me a free upgrade to a Soul.

I asked the nice young man if that was the car the chipmunks drove. He said, he thought they were hampsters, but yes.

Being the good sport I am I told him it was OK. To my self I said, "Please don't let it be that ugly green. Please don't let it be that ugly green. Please don't let it be that ugly green."

It was that ugly green.

Except for the mountain part, my impression is pretty much like LVSteves. Not a car that I'd buy for myself, but it was fine what I needed.

The AC worked, it drove nicely, it had XM or Sirius, which are the same thing. It was comfortable, it was quiet.

As it happens a friend of mine's daughter totaled her Nissan Cube. He was thinking of a Soul because of the size, reliability, and warranty. I told him it would be perfect for her based on my experience. He said he's NOT getting that ugly green.
