The original walnut grips on my 2nd Model American are in pretty nice condition. I do not want to put any accidental scuffs or nicks in them. To preserve the original grips, I would like to take them off and store them safely, and use replacement grips instead. I'm actually thinking of putting nice ones on .... like Sambar stag, or bison bone, or Elk antler. Does anyone know who makes replacement grips that would fit an original S&W 2nd Model American, Russian model. Here's a photo that shows the type of grips.

Kirk, American Model frames were not made to exact specification, like todays guns, so each one is slightly different is shape & contour. Custom grip makers, like Ajax or Eagle can make you a set of grips, out of most any material your wallet can afford, that will fit perfectly to your gun if you send them the gun. (Will Canadian laws let you ship the gun in and out of Canada?) Other replica grip makers, like NC Ordnance, etc make replica grips that you can use, but may need modification to fit correctly. Ebay often has replacement grips made for the navy & S&W Schofield Model 2000s. They can be a close fit to you gun and are fairly cheap. Ed.

Thanks, Ed, for that information. I would probably do the final fitting myself. I do not want to put my antique in the mail. It's perfectly legal both sides of the border, but I just don't want to trust my fine old sixgun to the tender mercies of the postal workers.

Kirk,

If you want a set of elkhorn stag grips, you can send a tracing of the gripframe to Patrick Grashorn at Grashorn's Gunworks, and I'm sure he will be able to make a set for you. And, of course, as always, you can specify how much or how little "bark" you want on them.

Ron

thanks, Ron. A tracing is a good idea. I'll take a look at Grashorn gunworks.
