Wrote to her friday, this was her response.

Thank you for contacting me in opposition to gun control legislation in the wake of the horrifying tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.

These shootings were acts of violence that our country has experienced far too often. I was shaken as I learned of the details of the shooting, which cut short the lives of so many little children and seven adults, causing such immense suffering and unspeakable grief for their families and their community.

I grew up in northern Maine where responsible gun ownership is part of the heritage of many families. While our country should examine what can be done to help prevent gun violence, denying the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens won't change the behavior of those who intend on using firearms for criminal purposes.

We need to have a national conversation to try to avert another devastating shooting. To be fruitful, however, that discussion must do more than focus solely on regulating firearms; it also needs to examine issues such as the glorification of violence in the media and video games and the mental health system in this country.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

Susan M. Collins
United States Senator

So far none of these responses say anything

If she grew up in Northern Maine.....she came from people that charish their guns and second ammendment rights. I am from NH and had my first rifle at 9 years old...they were tools just like a knife and fork that we used on a daily basis. We were taught firearms safety from my Dad and Uncles and any infraction was pointed out immediately in easy to understand terms. Most of the people I grew up with have guns and use them regurarly, they have never threatened others with a weapon and have never harmed another person.....but they are not about to give up their right to self defence if that becomes necessary. Many are Vets and fought for the freedom we have today. We also never pointed any weapon at another person ....not even a "toy" gun.
Why should any of the millions or peace loving and respectable safe gun owners be limited as to what they can have because an irresponsible criminal acted out and murdered innocent people? Its the peaceful majority that would step up and stop him if they had been poresent and had their concealed weapon on them. Logic and history seem to just fly out the window........Hard for me to understand why.
