After the Waltons he had a short-lived show where he played a lawyer that cruised up and down on the Mississippi on a tug boat taking on cases. I really liked it and hated when it got cancelled.

Waite was one of those actors who could steal a scene in silence, or with just a few quietly spoken words. Wish more of them existed.

I don't recall ever seeing him look bad or out his depth in a role. He nailed it as John Boy's Dad, and he nailed it as Gibbs' Dad in NCIS. He was just born to play the wise father of troubled youngsters, and I bet a lot of TV watchers with troubled children of their own learned a move or two from him.

And another thing, in real life that he was as genuine as he acted to be in-the Waltons etc. Few are like him. He also reminds me of my dad as well as Gregory Peck and James Stewart.

I seem to remember that show! I dont know the name but we watched whatever he was in.

In the last pic, above, he had the secret that good actors have - The eyes, and the smile.

R.I.P. Mr. Waite. Grandpa and Grandma Walton are waiting.

That's why I picked it--because he was genuine as a person. What you see is what you get.

I like to think I did learn from him too. I like to believe Im learned a bit on how to be fair about things--taking from watching him do things as Mr. Walton. I think he is a very good role model.

Well dang! There's another good one gone! I enjoyed his performance in everything I ever saw him in. I always admired him as a professional actor and as a person. I always thought of him as a man I would like to live next door to.

My wife always says that bad things happen in threes. Shirley Temple Black, Sid Ceasar and Ralph Waite. Hopefully thats it.

It is really tough seeing those that you grew up with passing away. Three legends have gone to the big stage in the sky. RIP :(

Thats the exact way I feel. I remember The Waltons came on on channel 10? at 9pm, and was the only show I was allowed to stay up to see. Ive been watching it on the Hallmark Channel and may start collecting the DvDs.

I hated it when John Boy left--wasnt near the same but--still a wholesome show. No nudity, no bad language-no gore.

I like his appearances on both NCIS and Bones.

I dont watch much TV outside of classic movies and shows, but had not known he was appearing anymore--till others mentioned it above and here. I guess ill start watching reruns of the shows.

Definitely an actor who should have had more roles.

We are diminished.

I fully agree. When I saw Cliffhanger, I was surprised he was in it but that made it much better. Michael Rooker was excellent and that was the first time I ever heard of him.
