Well, 2020 has delivered one last kick in the teeth to music lovers: Tony Rice has passed away at age 69. I heard him in concert years ago, and I have most of his albums...what a talented guy he was!

May he rest in peace, and may his memory be a blessing to his loved ones...

You guys are probably not old enough to remember but there was a bluegrass band called The New South that made a couple of albums and were always present at the may bluegrass festivals around the DC area at the time (I never missed one.) It was made up of a young Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, Tony Rice, JD Crowe and a base player who's name I can't recall. As you might guess, they were pretty good.

Trust me. I'm old enough to remember. Loved their version of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," and their long version of "Sally Goodin'." And, if I remember correctly, the bass player was Steve Bryant.:)

Tony was a great guitar player and a former student of Clarence White and later owned Clarence's famous Martin D-28.

Sad news, indeed. The times I was in Nashville people spoke his name with a hushed reverence. He was that much of a giant. Every flat picker list that ever came out...he was at the top.

He used Martin medium gauge strings on his Grail (1935 D-28)

He sold a lot of Martins and Martin strings.

PS: Bobby Slone was the bassist in New South.

I too remember the New South and the Bluegrass festivals in the DC area.
They surely were worth it price of admission. They played at the Birchmere in Alexandria several times with various different personnel. They were all good.
