some thoughts on S&W boxes
There are collectors of most everything ever made, cars, pottery, toys, musical instruments, tools, etc. et. al. ad infinitum. Cardboard containers for retail display/sales have almost always led the way until anti-theft, blister packs came along.
With firearms I, like many others, came into guns as "tools" whether hunting, target shooting, plinking or carry for self-defense. Just like toys at Christmas, the container is the first thing to get trashed, and with long guns the box gets trashed even quicker. In the 60's and 70's most LGS that I dealt with in several States, sold a handgun, holster, ammo, and maybe a belt too to the buyer and out the door he/she went. Boxes stacked up in the back room until trash time.
Now we are in 2020, some original boxes are in my case alone anywhere from 105 year old to my "newest" at 40 years old. I didn't search any out separately, they came with the gun and I never attributed (or paid) any premium for them, UNTIL these modern times when any collector would be remiss not to add some value for these irreplaceable items.
The S&W boxes I have are original to:
22-32 HFT shipped 9-20-1915; Model 36 shipped Jan 1967; Model 31-1 October 11, 1975, Model 39-2 1977, Model 27-2 shipped May 8, 1980.
S&W Boxes I have been given by people who had no use for them and were going to throw away, are for a Model 14-3, 6" with serial number 12K6426, and for a Model 10, 4" Blue, with s/n obliterated on the box end label.
Since I do own a Model 14-3, 6" and several Model 10, 4" these boxes (and the paperwork included) are period correct for my guns but not "THE" box as Collectors label the originals.
Anyway...just my opinion..USED to be not worth a premium, but are valuable today with the gun they shipped with, otherwise to me of lot lesser value.
