I took out my Revolving Rifle serial number 1 to answer a new members questions. I thought I'd post pictures again. Notice how the shoulder stock on #1 differs from other Revolving Rifles. It uses a short tang like the stocks for New Model Number 3's.

How does it shoot? Can you imagine what a holster would look like? Thanks for sharing the pictures. That is really neat.

Just a quick history on Number 1. Some of you already know most of it. It letters as owned by Joseph Wesson. D B Wesson owned number 25 and it has the long tang as seen on most of the Revolving Rifles. Somehow ownership next went to the postmaster in Springfield.
His widow had a boarding house. One summer night a boarder was sitting on the porch with her. He noticed "an odd looking gun holding open her screen door." She later gave it to him for his birthday. He owned it for a number of years. He later sold it to the previous owner, Bob Skinner of Windsor CT, who by the way owned several Revolving Rifles, in order to buy his children Christmas presents. I bought it shortly before Bob died from cancer. Most of the information here is from a four page letter about #1 I got from Bob shortly before he passed away. So, I guess I'm the fifth owner.

I had not seen any pictures of your rifle before, so either missed them or you posted others many years ago, so for me it's about time to show off your S&W.:) A great piece of company history and thanks for sharing. I'll bet that both Daniel and Walter had their hands all over your RR, and I wouldn't be suprised if Horace stopped by and held your #1 as well.

The only way I will ever get a #1 gun is to get out the grinder and remove 4 or 5 extra numbers . . . oh ya, there is one other way . . . here is my #1.

Great post. Congratulations on owning such an important gun.

I remember one day several years ago, I got a phone call from Don. He was somewhat nervous, as he was about to hock the farm to acquire this RR # 1 and had valid concerns about it's originality re: the shoulder stock attachment design. I told him I felt it was 100% correct in that it was based on the NM#3 design and later RRs were reengineered for a better stock attachment, however No. 1 RR went with what was then currently being used on revolvers.
I urged him to go for it, and if he changed his mind, I would gladly step into his shoes on the deal. Unfortunately for me, he took the deal. Ed.

That is one of the coolest firearms out there, hands down!

Tell us about the front sight, please. Is it a hooded post? And if so, are the posts interchangeable? And why do you suppose it was made with a removeable front sight? To make it easier to fit in a case or scabbard, maybe?

The reason I called Ed was someone else looked at it and declared it "Not real". Ed, over the phone put his arm around me and walked me thru a very stressful time. Louise and I took out a second mortage on the house to buy it. Again, thanks Ed.
To answer the question on the front sight, yes it is removeable. It works with the tang sight. Here is a picture of it.
And, no, I haven't shot it.

Thanks Don,
Now I know what that hole on the bottom of the tang site is for and what goes in it. I also realize that what I thought was a complete set of accessories for my RR, is not complete.

Don,
When are you going to have me come to MA to photograph the gun????
You need really good ones….how about we do a 'Poster"……would make a great display backdrop….
That gun deserves a fitted case….

Your welcome to come up today. Leave your camera at home. Bring shovels, lots and lots of shovels. Snow on my roof is waist deep!!!!
The Weather Channel is now naming snow storms, so far I haven't heard them use any one of the names I've used.
