Everyone,
On March 19th, the right to carry a loaded, concealed firearm in national parks and wild life refuges was suspended. You can help reverse this by sending President Obama an email expressing your view. If you choose to do so, it is best to be professional, short and to the point.

For example: Dear Mr. President, I support the right to carry a handgun for self defense in our nation's parks and wild life refuges. Please reinstate this policy immediately and expand it to include national parks and wildlife refuges in all states. This is essential for law abiding citizens to safely enjoy these areas without fear. Thank you.

You can send an email to the President by going to www.whitehouse.gov and click on Contact Us. The rest is easy.

Please encourage your like minded friends to do the same.

I am trying to get 10 people from each shooting/gun/ccw related forum that I can find to send the email. So far Trapshooters.com is in the lead.

If you send the email, please post so I can keep a running total.

Thanks,
Smity

Trucker Mike, thanks for taking the lead.

Did you know that the justification given to repeal the previous policy which allowed carrying in national parks was that the proper environmental impact study had not been completed. Huh?! We can't let something like that happen without speaking up.

Thanks,
Smity

Here's my analysis of the situation:

The injunction against the implementation of the new rule is invalid, as the plaintiffs in the case do not present any valid "case or controversy" as required by the Constitution. They lack standing. The court therefore lacks jurisdiction.

The prior rule was effectively vacated with the imposition of the new rule. The court lacks the authority to reinstate the former rule. To do so would involve exactly the same problem as was complained of in this case.

My conclusion: if the court has jurisdiction, then there presently is no rule that applies to the carrying of firearms in parks, and state law applies. If the court has no jurisdiction, then the new rule is in effect and state law applies. Since the parks are land owned by the U.S. within states, the U.S. has the status of a landowner and cannot make rules contrary to the states in which the land exists, so state law applies. Since the U.S. Constitution provides for exclusive power to regulate the ownership, possession, and use of firearms to the States, then state law applies. Since the Heller decision applies to all property owned or operated by the U.S., and the former rule is contrary to that because it unreasonably restricts a gun owner's right to self-defense, the former rule is void, and state law applies.

Thanks for the input. Many are sending the email with their own language. I think that this is great! It shows that we are intelligent, responsible people who treasure the right of self defense. Stay on point, keep it short and professional. Post when you are done so I can count yours as well.

Thanks,
Smity

This was written and sent to the President from someone on another forum responding to this posting.

"Our great nation has survived many trials and tribulations supported by the broad shoulders and the intellect of the US citizenship. From all walks of life we have served, from the poor to the rich. As a nation of broad interests, different opinions, and cherished heritages it is impossible to invoke rules that limit the rights of some people without making them feel inferior to the citizens who do not exercise these rights. I fear for people like me who do honor and respect the rights our fathers fought and died for. Please do not limit us, the good people, nor separate our household into different classes of citizens based on the rights we choose to exercise. United as a people, as a body of the good, the just, and the free. I ask that you consider the removal of the suspension put in place that does not allow me to carry a concealed firearm in our national parks as a lawful citizen.

Thank You,

***** ******* "

Well said!!!! Who else will speak up?

Hate to say this guys, but you are tied for the lowest response with coltforum.com. Unless you want this forum to be where you talk about the good ol' days when you could own a handgun called a Smith and Wesson, I would act. You have an opportunity now to weigh in before the court makes it's decision. You better believe that the Obama Administration is going to try to influence the decision somehow. ...and if you think that it's no big deal, its only national parks, check this out!

The National Park System of the United States is the collection of physical properties owned or administered by the National Park Service. This includes all areas designated National Parks and most National Monuments, as well as several other types of protected areas of the United States. The following is a list of all of the national parks. http://home.nps.gov/applications/par...oz.cfm?start=A

This is not about shooting an attacking bear in the woods. Gettysburg is a national park! This is an attempt to put a large swath of the country off limits to people who carry Smith and Wessons. What's next? In DC, if you have a permit, you still can't carry within 1000 ft of school property, daycare, parks, arcades, etc. Go to google maps and type in Washington, DC schools, then imagine a 1000 ft circle around each point. It's about 40% of the city! That makes the entire city off limits because you can't possibly get from one point to another without hitting one of these areas. Take a look: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=...-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl

Let the NRA fight it in the courts, we have to weigh in to our elected officials in order to take away their will to do such things and change their will to support our more reasonable, responsible point of view. Right now, they only hear from those who believe the opposite. Shame on us if we don't say anything. What will you do?

USER,

You may be over complicating the issue. Want to bet that the original ruling banning CCW in National Parks did not have an EIS before implementation? That information should be available under the FOIA. Of course there is no reason to think one would not be fabricated and back-dated if a request was made. However you could argue the original law is not valid either without an EIS.

Anyone can carry in the National Parks. Concealed carry, don't brandish it and if you have to use it employe the 3S practice, shoot, shovel and shutup.

Thank you all for your participation. I will continue to update the numbers if anyone else weighs in.

*****UPDATE*****

In my original post, I suggested going to www.whitehouse.gov to write to the President. I have since changed that based on some advice someone gave me in another forum. If you go to http://capwiz.com/nra/dbq/officials/ you can put in your zip code and write to the President, your Senators and Representative all at the same time. You can also choose to send it in email form or print it in a letter. It's quite impressive. You can also do the same for your state and local officials from the site. It's connected with NRA ILA, but you don't have to be a member and I didn't see any logo or anything on the email.

Smity888, there are many ways that we are all individually addressing this abuse of presidential power.

The most effective way is via our state politicians who must see us every day on the streets. In my area, they are great and very supportive.

The federal politicians are less dependable, for they don't see us and only "need" us on election days. They are truly a bloated little elite club of career politicians enriching themselves off the monies from the huge special interest groups and ramming laws down our throats we do NOT believe in.

IN THE MEANTIME . . . we must work for the day when the states once again have sovereignty over their land, and the citizens have control over their state politicians . . . as guaranteed in the Constitution!

Right is RIGHT!

Tom,
Thanks for the input. You're right, contacting local representatives is incredibly important. But, I wouldn't trade one for the other. It is so easy to send the emails through the NRA-ILA tool listed above that it can only help to weigh in with the President, Senators and Representatives. I think we should use all of the methods we have available. That NRA-ILA tool http://capwiz.com/nra/dbq/officials/] http://capwiz.com/nra/dbq/officials/[/url] is a "force multiplier" that we can use.

Let's do both. What say you?

Best advice yet!..........As I don't usually hike or backpack with a shovel.......1 and 3 will have to suffice.

Seriously folks.......You don't want to put yourself in a position to deal/reason with park rangers. I personally know accounts of rangers writing citations to folks trying to photogragh animals at night in some of the parks out in the desert Southwest. The citation was for disturbing wildlife with artificial light. Anyone that knows squat about desert wildlifle knows that they are most active after dark. This newest crop of park rangers regard tourists as intruders on their domain. They are somehow missing the point that National Parks are PUBLIC PROPERTY!

tdan,
Here in Jersey, wrongful possession is 3 years mandatory! -- not worth the risk.

My goal here is to focus as much effort on this one issue as I possibly can. If we can somehow harness support from all shooting/gun/ccw forums at the same time on the critical issues at the critical time, we can make a difference. Right now, the National Parks issue is in the courts and it is in a bill in Congress. This is a critical issue at the critical moment.

The total is now up to 61. Not a knock out punch but definitely a good, stiff, stinging jab right in the nose.

I am learning that this is a slow process. It takes a while for all members of a forum to check in to see what's happening. I am hoping that we can get some more people to weigh in on this forum. As long as the number keeps going up, I'll keep counting and posting.

Hi again Smity888,

I just got a letter in the mail today from my Congressional Representative, thanking me for writing and asking him to oppose S.22, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009.

He did indeed oppose it, as he also mentioned in his letter, and he apologized for the delay in responding back to me.

Although I've been a Republican since '83, I've supported this "Blue Dog Democrat" because he thinks a lot like I do on a lot of issues. He has an A rating by the NRA.

We need good representation in both the house and senate . . . and a bunch more good people to replace some of the crooks up there.

We must all remain vigilant to insure that this happens, and support the good ones when we get 'em!

T.

Amen. I contact my state level senators and representatives often, the Governor too, but I normally get canned responses. Consider yourself lucky.
