A good friend of mine manages the gun dept. of a local sporting goods store. He said some fellow came in the other day to buy a gun. When my friend called in his info. they turned him down with the reason being that he had purchased too many firearms and ammo in the past few months. Is there a limit to how many guns you can have?
Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?

Not me, but there is a law that mandates the filing of a specific form immediately if an individual purchases multiple purchases of handguns(over one) within a prescribed amount of days...........if I am not mistaking.
Possible that had happened possibly more than once. Could have been anything, but reason for right of refusal seems like it would not have been shared with the FFL holder calling it in....... in my humble opinion.

How would they know how much ammo he purchased?
I have not heard of it,but there must be a point when a red flag appears for someone being more than a collector, and perhaps a reseller.

Credit card activity tells all you want to know about a person. Unfortunately, the .gov has a "vital interest" in information and has programs tailored to their pre-set parameters to monitor "citizen welfare." Joe

I would think this ties into the arrests made out west of folks selling legally purchased guns to those less scruptlious and headed to Mexico. Had a gun approval delayed a couple of days and make purchases pretty regularly. Was approved eventually. I try to stay away from low budget 45's etc. Been buying prewar 22's collector items, really not on their radar. Minor inconvience, just doing their job. Just my guess.

Depends on your locality. Some of the laws are written vague enough to give local authorities quite a range of discretion.
I have heard of a local PD placing a purchase on "hold" because the person had outstanding tickets, etc. that they wanted to "discuss" with the person first.

IIRC my state gives them up to 30 days (don't quote me on that) to place a "hold" and provide an actual reason to deny the transaction.....err....."research" period I think is what they call it.

I only know of the one instance though and this was before insta-check (we still have a waiting period for non-CPL holders).

One good reason for me to continue using that old outdated stuff called... cash.:)

No there is no federal law that says you can only buy or posses so many. Some states ration handguns to one a month. Some limit the amount of ammo you can have but how would anyone know. I think maybe the guys wife was in touch with the gun shop and told them they better tell him that he had bought to many. FWIW the fed are not allowed to keep records of checks done unless there is a denial so if they are keeping track they are breaking the law by keeping track. He needs to get an attorny to get an explanation and point out there is no legal limit and they will be sued for violating his civil rights if they do not allow him to buy the gun.

I'm from Alabama and our gun laws are pretty lax comparatively speaking. I don't think this guy was trying to multiple guns at one time; we do have a law about that. But I think he had been buying every assault weapon he could get his hands on since the new administration took over. I may have misspoken about the ammo; maybe they don't know about it. But it still sounds like something is going on under the table.
Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but it's got a "gun control" ring about it to me.

Federal Law

While there is no Federal Law on howmany guns you can own there is a requirement for a dealer to file paperwork with ATF (Multiple purchase) when you buy two or more guns in a 5 business day period. Title 18 USCS 923 (g)(A)

Only applies to handguns - long guns no problem, no extra paperwork.

You could order two dozen Colt 6920s from CDNN tomorrow if you wanted, and in theory there's no law that will prohibit the sale. However, there are anecdotal reports of individuals who've had ATF or DHS agents show up to say hello and ask a few questions.

I have no idea what happened. I was under the impression that NCIS merely gave a proceed, delayed or denied response with no further information provided.
