Interestingly, I have never read any of the books that made him famous; that is, his crime novels.

I am a huge fan of his Westerns, though. I bought a few of them at a used book store some 20-25 years ago and quickly became a fan. Hombre; Last Stand at Saber River; Valdez is Coming, just to name a few. Looking at his website, I see there are a few Westerns I missed. I need to make a trip to a big used book store soon.

I loved all of his work, but especially appreciated his westerns. Leonard's work took the western meme to a higher level. I will miss him. RIP.

I have read most of his crime writing, and I'm gonna say most of his westerns. He was also a prolific screenwriter, and a lot of his later books seem written to go direct to movie. He is undoubtedly one of the great crime writers, but it struck me that on some of his later stuff, he was just phoning it in.

My favorites are still Swag (set in Detroit with a younger Ernest Stickley, the title character in Stick) and Kill Shot.

RIP Elmore Leonard. Thank you for leaving us the legacy of excellent writing.

He was a fair hand at comedy as well. "Get Shorty" is one of my favorite movies based on his book.

He will be missed. R.I.P. I wonder how the lack of his creative influence will affect "Justified"?

Although Justified certainly has that special "Dutch Leonard" twangy wit, I can not think he was in on much of the day to day dialog.
I have read most all of his books and consider his style my favorite. His last book, about the Somali pirates, while on a hot-button topic, was as marshwheeling said above, apparently phoned in, and maybe not by him, but by one or more of his supposedly, 15 researchers he was having to use in his advancing years. Still,..his is a body of work to be admired.
