Gore Vidal did illustrate that very intelligent people can be complete idiots......

I read about his death in a NYT piece that covered his life, and honestly, he sounded like a snobish, arrogant, elitist bore. A very unpleasant person in all aspects to put it bluntly.

Vidal, of course, set Buckley up for one of the great retorts of all time: "Now listen, you queer*, you stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I'll sock you in the ******* face."

Dunno if that happened in an actual debate, but the adversarial tone of the exchange suggests a debate as backdrop.
