Baseball and NFL fans lost a legendary voice today with the death of Harry Kalas. Harry was the voice of the Phillies since 1971 and the voice of NFL Films since the passing of John Facenda - another Philadelphia broadcasting legend.

Living close enough to Philadelphia (90 miles away) has allowed me to listen to Harry call some games and it was always a treat to hear him.

I grew up in Southern California listening to Vin Scully call the Dodger games. Announcers like Scully and Kalas have a way of painting a picture for the listener - a gift that is not often exercised in these times of wall to wall TV coverage. For me, it is even better to listen to these maestros of the microphone over the radio rather than watch the game on TV.

What a loss...
